heritage railway. Vlasina Lake, the largest artificial lake in Ser- bia, is located in Southeast Serbia, on the territory of the mu- nicipality of Surdulica. Surrounded by Gramada, Vardenik and Čemernik mountains, it is located at an elevation of 1,213 m/asl. The water temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius during the summer months, making it very pleasant for swimming, while the beaches are genuinely natural, i.e. grassy. Apart from the beautiful nature, here you’ll also be delighted by the "islands". These so-called floating islands, which are unique to Vlasina, are formed when the lake’s water level rises. The islands are made of peat and are the product of centuries of decaying peat mosses. Standing on them is a unique feeling. The ground is soft, while the entire surface of the islands is covered with lush vegetation. The peat’s thickness varies from one to three metres. These floating islands are protected as a rare phenomenon and a natural good.
