For hedonists: Halloumi and Commandaria You know that wonderful cheese that creaks under your teeth when its fresh and stretches when fried or grilled, melting in the mouth? Yes, Cyprus is the home of halloumi, a cheese made from goat’s milk that the European Union granted a flam- boyant label - halloumi is only hal- loumi if it is from Cyprus! On the island it is served everywhere, even in fast food, and goes well with sal- ad, bread and olive oil, but also with sweet marmalade! This is an abso- lute gourmet adventure that you shouldn’t miss! Also, Cyprus’s famous dessert wine is said to be the oldest in the world! With an exceptionally favour- able geographical position, perfect soil and a large number of sunny days, Cyprus is an ideal place for growing grapevines. And there, in the village of Erimi, a great wine centre was situated 4,500 years ago, where they made the sweet red wine Nama, which was even mentioned in antiq-
uity by Hesiod, Homer and Pliny the Elder. The destiny of this wine was nevertheless determined the most by the legend claiming that King Rich- ard the Lionheart of England, upon conquering Cyprus in the Third Cru- sade, tried this wine at his own wed- ding, in Limassol in 1191, and alleg- edly declared it: the wine of kings and the king of wines! Though locals al- ways called this wine Nama, today’s name was devised by the Knights Templar of the Order of Saint John, who bought the island from Rich- ard and took over the wine’s produc- tion on an estate that they named La Grande Commandarie. Com- mandaria contains all elements of Cyprus: honey, grass, vanilla, spic- es and dried fruit. According to lo- cal oenologists, it is like a window into the soul of Cyprus. So let the halloumi creak under your teeth and the wine slide down to the very es- sence of Cyprus... For lovers of wonder: aliens live here Cyprus is a great place for lovers of wonder, such that one of the offers for tourists is UFO hunting! Name- ly, experts say that the sky above this island has many unusual phe- nomena, strange lights and happen- ings that may or may not be scientif- ically explainable, so everyone who wants to discover visitors from oth- er planets has something to look for- ward to in Cyprus. Many tourists have posted snapshots and photos of “alien phenomena”, and who are we to contradict them?
