The River Drina Canyon, which is up to a thousand metres deep in parts, is the second biggest in Europe and the third biggest in the world, after Colorado’s Grand Canyon and the Tara River Canyon Kanjon Drine, ponegde dubok i hiljadu metara, drugi je po veličini u Evropi i treći u svetu, posle Kolorada i Tare
breaks its own banks. In March 1896 the Drina reached a high-water level of 14 metres above normal and flooded over the bridge in Višegrad, devastated Ljubo- vija, and swept away arable land... There was nothing else for it – the river had to be tamed with the construc- tion of dams, and so the artificial lakes of Višegradsko, Zvorničko and Perućac were formed. This infringed on its nat- ural beauty, but didn’t destroy it. No other river in Serbia is as appeal- ing to lovers of regattas as the Drina. That’s why, from spring to late summer, this wild river hosts a series of regattas that attracts tens of thousands of partici- pants from Serbia and around the world. And when they’ve been once, they al- ways return to the Drina. To meet an- other of her thousand faces. Traces of Roman settlements have been found in the lower section of the Drina. The Drina Valley played an impor- tant role in the network of Roman roads crossing the Balkan Peninsula, as con- firmed by historical sources and archae- ological finds. Following the death of Emperor The- odosius I in 395AD, the Roman Empire was divided into Western and Eastern empires, and the Drina area found it- self on the border between two worlds. In the Middle Ages, the most important trade routes passed through the Drina and its basin area, connecting Serbian lands with the West. It was actually these roads that had the greatest impact on the development of trade and prosper- ity in this region.
LITTLE HOUSE ON THE ROCK The little house on a rock in the middle of the river close to Bajina Bašta is one of the top attractions on the Drina. This little wooden wonder has withstood the Drina’s dreaded might for almost half a century. National Geographic magazine dedicated an issue to this shack five years ago, after which it was featured in articles in the UK’s Daily Mail and Business Insider, which ranked it among the world’s 16 strangest houses. The Daily Mail’s journalist jested at the time that its tenants were at least fortunate enough not to have any problems with their neighbours. The hut was constructed by several enthusiasts as a place for swimmers to rest. Building material was transported by boat or simply dropped from up river and “grabbed” from the rock.
