You have made a difference in the lives of countless students and colleagues.” The wall is the brainchild of Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry Dr. Angela Alleyne who has been reflecting on the contribution of the past professors. She noted, “It is important that we acknowledge those who have gone before us and laid the groundwork for where we are today. We are standing on their shoulders.” Alleyne anticipates that many more portraits will be added to what she called a “living project” as other scientists join the professorial ranks. The wall currently features professors Oliver Headley BSc (UWI), PhD (UCL), Prof. of Chemistry; Wayne Hunte BSc, PhD (UWI), Prof. of Ecology & Environmental Sciences; George “Ted” Mathison BSc (Bristol), PhD (Nottm.), Emeritus Prof. of Biology; C. M. Sean Carrington BSc (Edin.), DPhil (York-UK), Emeritus Prof. of Plant Biology; Leonard O’Garro BSc, PhD (UWI), Prof. of Plant Pathology; Julia Horrocks BSc (Reading), PhD (UWI), Prof. of Conservation Ecology; Winston Tinto BSc, PhD (UWI), CSci, CChem, FRSC, Prof. of Organic Chemistry; and Mark Lavoie BSc, MSc, PhD (Montreal), Prof. of Microbiology. u
reminder of their contributions to that department and to the field of science. “These professors have shaped the minds of countless students, and their contributions to the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Cave Hill campus, The University of the West Indies and to the field of science as a whole are immeasurable. For 75 years, our university has been a centre of excellence in education and research in the region, and our faculty has played a leading role in that success for 39 years,” Williams said. She also offered special appreciation to past and present professors in the faculty for their dedication : “You have inspired and mentored generations of students to pursue their passions and to make a difference in the world. Your ground- breaking research activities have advanced our understanding of how the world works and have contributed to solutions that have redounded to the benefit of Barbados, the

The unveiling took place during a week of activities held by the Faculty of Science and Technology last October to mark its 39 th year of existence.
