Launches Third Unit

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Clive Landis said the groundbreaking initiative reaffirms the commitment of The University of the West Indies to use its legal and research expertise to help fight climate change. He said the trio of units is a testament to advocacy and activism in areas of importance to the Caribbean region and its peoples, and he commended those leading the charge for their foresight and leadership. “The establishment of this unit reflects the faculty’s steadfast commitment to fostering academic excellence, driving meaningful research, and equipping our students with the knowledge and skills needed to confront the complex environmental issues of our time. It has not gone unnoticed that the Faculty of Law has launched three units in three contemporary areas of law and policy crucial to the sustainable development of our region.” The newly established unit falls under the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan of the Faculty
Already credited for providing stellar education that has shaped much of the
region’s jurisprudence and helped to define our legal landscape, the Faculty of Law continues to provide guidance for Caribbean social and economic development. Within the past three years, it has established three units to address issues critical to regional states.
Alana Lancaster Head, Caribbean Environmental Law Unit The UWI, Cave Hill Campus
The Caribbean Environmental Law Unit (CELU) , established last December as the faculty’s newest, has as its focus - the environment, ocean governance and climate justice. Earlier in the same year, the faculty introduced its Alternative Dispute Resolution Unit (ADR Unit) . Closing off the trifecta is the Law and Health Research Unit (LHR Unit) launched in July 2021.
