J abari, expressing pride in his father’s achievements, emphasised the valuable work and seeing him rewarded for all those hours made the evening [ceremony] even sweeter. Overall, it’s taught us that we don’t have to think of these things as impossible or out of reach. “I was and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity. When I started my degree [in Theology], my main goal was just to get through it, but I soon learnt to love my field of study. Thus, being able to share that moment of victory with my dad, and celebrate him also, was amazing,” Jabari continued. A diella’s completion of a Master’s degree in International Trade Policy sparked friendly family rivalry, inspiring Rodney’s return to university, hinting at a future where academic success becomes a cherished tradition. Rodney’s motivation extends beyond lesson learnt: “I am extremely impressed with my dad’s hard familial competition; he aspires to set an example for his younger son Nicholas. With a commitment to a legacy of learning, Rodney envisions a future where academic success becomes synonymous with the Lewis family name. Amidst challenges and sacrifices during his educational journey, Rodney’s determination to graduate alongside Jabari led him to sleep on campus some nights. Buoyed by success, his career aspirations now align with e-governance, leveraging
skills to navigate the intersection of information technology, communications and politics, and addressing issues from cyber security to change management. Rodney’s life experiences enriched not only his personal journey but also the values passed down to his children. He emphasised the importance of diligence, stating: “I am a strong believer that you will have to work hard at some point in your life.” His belief in the power of education as a universal language resonates in his conviction that good education is the key to overcoming barriers. In acknowledging those who supported him during his academic journey, Rodney expressed gratitude to mentors and role models. He singled out his late mother, mentioned several friends and gave special mention to lecturer Dr. Pearson Broome for delivering thought-provoking courses that challenged individuals to think outside the box.
A standout moment for Rodney is the conceptual design he developed for the implementation of ICT in public transportation to reduce traffic congestion and the carbon footprint. This project showcases his innovative thinking, practical application of his academic knowledge, and reflects his commitment to using technology for positive societal change. Looking ahead, Rodney envisions a future where the Lewis family’s unique dynamic contributes to building a formidable enterprise, benefitting not only the nuclear unit but black families at large.
