High Achievers Saluted for their Endurance and Resilience

I n a special recognition ceremony, awards were presented to the 121 undergraduates who achieved First Class Honours, 57 who received their master’s degree with distinction, one recipient of the Master of Philosophy with High Commendation, and five PhD graduates. Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Clive Landis said the awardees displayed endurance and resilience in the face of numerous challenges, attributes that contribute to character-building and place them on a strong footing to overcome future challenges and achieve further success. Among the challenges he identified were the existential threat of climate change, and the use of artificial intelligence to propagate misinformation and disinformation.

The top performing students were saluted for outstanding scholastic achievement two days ahead of last year’s annual graduation ceremony.

“You, on the other hand, being information literate, and socially and culturally responsible can make sense of it all, even the deepfake pranks using artificial intelligence (AI). So it is, therefore, important that your voice is heard as the voice of reason to inform public debate in Caribbean society.” Professor Landis urged the students to remain well-grounded in their regional identity while being globally aware, while issuing a caution about AI. “AI can be deployed effectively and responsibly as a tool to project Caribbean values and creativity in the global imagination. As critical and creative thinkers, you are able to embrace AI literacy to amplify our unique culture and the fine ethical viewpoints of the Caribbean
