Cultural Researcher Wins Thesis Competition

walked away with the People’s Choice award and went on to place second in the cross- campus competition which involved other UWI campuses. The students each had three minutes to deliver a convincing orated summary of their research and its significance in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. The overarching aim was to increase the academic, presentation, and research communication skills of researchers, according to The University of Queensland that first developed the research communication competition in 2008. The competition was adopted by The University of the West Indies, Mona in 2021, and the following year, it invited sister campuses Cave Hill and St. Augustine to participate. In the 9 June 2023 competition hosted

by Cave Hill, five students entered and were judged by Dr. Korah Belgrave (Chief Judge), Senator Dr. Kristina Hinds , Dr. Thea Scantlebury-Manning , and Lt. Col. Junior Browne . The other two competitors each represented the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies ( SALISES ) and the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES). The victorious Jelani , whose research topic is “Bush Medicine: The Curative Powers of Sacred Herbal Remedies” said she is passionate about her area of focus. “I’m appreciative and I’m humbled. I want to thank everyone who had a part in organising the treatment of this competition, and I’m happy they thought it worthy enough for me to be judged the winner, especially with it being the first three-minute
