Fond Remembrance of Justice Jefferson “Jeff” Cumberbatch In the halls of academia and the chambers of justice, the legacy of Justice Jefferson Cumberbatch resonates deeply. His recent passing at age 66 has left a void across the region especially in the hearts of those who knew him. Fondly known as "Jeff," Justice Cumberbatch was not only a distinguished legal scholar but also a cherished member of the academic community.
H is tenure as Senior Lecturer in Law and Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Law at The UWI, Cave Hill Campus, followed by his appointment as Justice of Appeal at the Supreme Court of Barbados in January 2020, showcased his unwavering commitment to the pursuit of legal excellence. Throughout his nearly thirty years of service to the campus, Justice Cumberbatch left an enduring mark, shaping the minds of future legal practitioners and contributing to the academic and administrative fabric of the institution. Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles remembered the late Justice as a ‘salt of the earth’ colleague “whose dignified and silky presence within our academy was always felt but never loudly heard”.
Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law Dr. Antonius Hippolyte acknowledged Justice Cumberbatch’s invaluable legacy and reflected on his far-reaching influence. “His impact was felt far outside the walls of the Cave Hill Law Faculty as he also lectured in Sports Law and Medical Law in the Faculties of Sport and Medical Sciences and did extensive consultancy work and public service including as a member of the local Consumer Claims Tribunal as well as Chair of the Fair Trading Commission . He was deeply loved and highly respected by staff and students alike and will be sorely missed.” Justice Cumberbatch's academic journey at Cave Hill began in 1980 and spanned nearly three decades, during which time he held various administrative roles and made significant contributions to legal scholarship. From his early days as Temporary Lecturer to assuming the ceremonial role of Public Orator, his dedication to legal education remained unwavering. P ersonal tributes offered poignant glimpses into Justice Cumberbatch's impact on those fortunate enough to have crossed his path. Colleagues recalled his invaluable guidance on various issues and his steadfast commitment to fairness and objectivity. Former students reminisced about his exceptional teaching style,
characterised by clarity, grace, and unwavering support. Solemn mourners bade farewell to Justice Jefferson Cumberbatch at his funeral service on 8 February, many pledging to honour his legacy as a legal luminary, mentor, and friend. Though his physical presence may be gone, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the enduring principles he upheld. u
