A HISTORY TO BE PROUD OF
C ave Hill’s legacy of steadfast leadership and sterling accomplishments augur well for its future, according to noted historian Professor Alan Cobley , and he has pleaded with current campus leaders to help preserve its rich history. He was presenting the first instalment of the Legacy Lecture Series hosted by the campus to celebrate its 60 th anniversary, on the topic “From Zero to Sixty: The Cave Hill Story, 1963-2023” , delivered on 21 March 2023.

The Professor of South African and Comparative History singled out the legacy of continuity at its helm for having helped nurture that ‘resolute and resilient spirit’ that has allowed the campus to weather the myriad of challenges over the years. He noted there have been six principals in 60 years; three of them, Sir Sidney Martin, Sir Keith Hunte and Sir Hilary Beckles, accounted for 50 of those years. Professor Cobley said a similar pattern exists in the Office of Registrar where Woodie Blackman, Austin
Alleyne, Andrew Lewis, Jacqueline Wade and Kenneth Walters accounted for over 50 years of service. He said five chief financial officers have held the key position of Bursar, the longest serving being Victor Cooke, who presided over the Campus finances for over 30 years.
Cobley delved into the rich history of the campus touching on areas of administration, general enrolment, gender composition, postgraduate enrolment, the faculties, staff and student protests, the social life on and off campus, and infrastructural development. He noted that the campus’s journey
