Poet: JACINTH HOWARD Launches Single-authored Book W hen Lecturer in Literatures in English at Cave Hill Campus, Dr. Debra Providence read The Mother Island , she said she had little choice but to confront contesting emotions. The motherhood-inspired poetry collection was the first single- authored book by her campus colleague, Dr. Jacinth
Howard , also a lecturer in Literatures in English. The publication was officially launched during a ceremony held last June, when Providence gave her critique. Providence said she not only had to deal with conflicting emotions but was forced to take a closer examination of the ideas of home and place, mothering, traditions and inheritances, generational curses, burdens, blessings, and silences. “[The book’s] layered structure invites scrutiny,” she said. “Within each [of the four] sections are groupings that engage in a call and response dynamic or a call and echo where a thought is expressed in one poem and picked up and reverberated in another and another and another.” She said the poem titles were also worthy of scrutiny despite their seeming simplicity as they contained cleverly layered wordplay. Known for her work in prose, poetry and drama, Dr. Howard is a former island scholar of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She earned second place in The 23rd Frank Collymore Literary Endowment Awards competition held in 2021. Last June, she showcased her work at the 40 th edition of the Poetry Market (Marché de la Poésie) in Paris, France.
