He also stressed the need for individuals to read widely in order to be better informed on various issues: “The most important books are those which would be self-critical. We have here a number of books from the Japanese Embassy [which deal with] the nuclear station disaster, what lessons can be learnt; it’s speaking about the long stagnation of the economy in Japan and what lessons can be learnt. And that is the sign of a mature democracy, when you can critically assess where things are going wrong and make that decisive step in logic, which will take you forward,” he stated. Barbados and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1967, and Ambassador Fukushima pointed to areas in which the Em- bassy has been strengthening its ties with Barbados, including through culture, sports, and person-to-person exchanges to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.

Students wishing to expand their knowledge of Japanese culture now have access to a growing collection of literature, following a donation of books from the READ JAPAN PROJECT . The READ JAPAN PROJECT is an initiative of the Nippon Foundation , a social innovation organisation, and aims to foster an understanding of the country through the donation of books on Japan to universities and libraries around the world. A mbassador of Japan to Barbados Her Excellency Kayoko Fukushima made the presentation to Principal of Cave Hill campus Professor Clive Landis in the Sidney Martin Library last 12 September. “Books are very powerful things. And throughout history, there have been attempts to burn books, to destroy them, to destroy collections, [and] to destroy knowledge. And what we have here today is the very opposite. We have a book donation from another culture, from the Embassy of Japan, to help enrich our knowledge base here at the campus, and to enrich our knowledge and understanding of Japan as a country,” Landis said.
