AI Not the Enemy
As educators seek ways to prevent students from cheating by using artificial intelligence (AI), a United States-based professor is urging educational institutions in the Caribbean to explore new ways of testing them.
T echnology proponent, as some students have begun utilising AI to write essays. Essays are a common method of assessment in secondary- and tertiary- level institutions in the region. Skilling made the comments during the third annual Science and Technology Festival held in March 2023 at Cave Hill. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology (MIIST) in collaboration with the Faculty of Science and Technology . Professor Craig Skilling of Florida International University said the institutions need to adapt
“Don’t worry about them [students] cheating on an exam. Stop giving them so many essays to write. Assess them in a different way, in a different modality. Those students can go online and download ChatGPT and have their paper completed in ten seconds. Unless you have the software and the technology to check that, you will not understand what they’re doing.” The award-winning educator who serves as Director of Innovation, Technology, Entertainment, and Esports and Associate Professor at Florida Memorial University insisted that technological advancements should be embraced and not shunned.
