Dry Substrate is tan to gray in color, crumbles to dust, pulls away from sides of container
Medium Substrate is light brown in color, no water can be extracted, and substrate crumbles
Moist Substrate is brown in color, strongly squeezing the substrate will extract drops of water
Wet Substrate is dark brown but not shiny, no free water seen at the surface, when pressed water drips easily
Saturated Substrate is dark brown to shiny, free water on surface, water drips freely from the bottom of container
