Stiff Knee Syndrome (in medical lingo, Arthrofibrosis)

This condition can occur after surgery on the knee, such as a knee replacement. Over time, scar tissue builds up inside the knee, causing the knee joint to shrink and tighten. Scar tissue from stiff knee syndrome can severely impact your knee’s range of motion. In the most severe instances, it can result in a permanent inability to bend and straighten the knee. Some knee stiffness following a total knee replacement is normal. Severe stiffness is not. So how do you know if you have stiff knee syndrome? • You walk with a bent knee • There is increased amount of pain which could be the result of stiff knee syndrome, especially when it occurs along with reduced flexibility. • There is swelling in the soft tissue around your knee. This is different than swelling due to fluid buildup.
