A NOTE FROM SYLVIA We often think of November as the beginning of the holiday season, but it also marks another season of importance—election season. I have always found fulfillment in civic engagement. Volunteering for organizations that have an impact, educating myself on social and political issues, and upholding my civic duty by voting are essential life activities for me. Twin Cities PBS has had a deep and enduring commitment to civic education since its founding 65 years ago. As you look through this month’s magazine, you will see our commitment represented throughout our programming schedule. Our cover features Vote 2022: Election Night Special , which is the pinnacle of PBS NewsHour ’s 2022 election coverage. Almanac , TPT’s weekly public affairs show, is the longest running state- wide public affairs television program in Minnesota history. Almanac is profiled this month to highlight its key role in public affairs coverage for all Minnesotans. In a time when it is hard to find news that goes beyond click-bait headlines, Almanac has remained dedicated to providing a space for important context and reasoned debate. I hope you enjoy reading about its impact and hearing from those who create this award-winning series. Keep in mind that you can always stream past debates hosted by Almanac as well as coverage of prominent political issues at tpt.org/almanac . November is also Native American Heritage Month.You can find information about Native American history, arts, and culture programming on page 8, but I want to bring special attention to Bring Her Home . This TPT produced documentary—which just won the 2022 Best Feature Film at the NatiVision Film Festival—will be rebroadcast this month on TPT 2 and available for streaming at tpt.org/bring-her-home . The film tells the story of three Indigenous women as they fight to vindicate and honor their relatives who have fallen victim to the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women. Almanac : Context, Depth, and a Little Dose of Quirkiness
“I grew up watching variety shows in the 1960s, and Almanac is kind of a variety show that tackles the news,” says Brendan Henehan, Almanac ’s Producer and Manager of Public Affairs at Twin Cities PBS (TPT), who has been with the show since its launch in 1984. The early production team was challenged to create something different from the obligatory, 30-minute, week-in-review type shows. They aimed for faster pacing, a wider variety of topics, and, most importantly, a little bit of fun.
informed on the issues impacting the state, while interspersing live opera, the latest on bird migration, or a quirky story or poem. What has changed is the breadth of the show’s coverage. To ramp up state political coverage, the team added a Capitol reporter to the mix in the late 1990s. In 2002, Almanac at the Capitol began broadcasting from the House Chamber inside the State Capitol when the legislature is in session. Almanac has also evolved to include more coverage of Greater Minnesota, most notably with the addition of Reporter Kaomi Lee, and increased its commitment to ensuring guests represent the racial diversity of TPT’s viewing community. Almanac is the longest-running program at TPT and the longest-running statewide public affairs program in Minnesota. Almanac at the Capitol is the second longest-running TPT program and public affairs program in the state. Almanac is broadcast live across the state every Friday night by the six public television stations in Minnesota, which means Almanac is the one place all Minnesotans can hear from their public officials and learn about the issues impacting the state together.

and a lot of partisan sources. To try to be a nonpartisan, trusted place is really important.”
Almanac ’s live format means it can pivot and provide a space that speaks to the issues and events on the forefront of viewers' minds when they tune in each Friday. The program is one of the few sources where all Minnesotans can watch political debates for statewide races. It captured the excitement of Jesse Ventura’s grassroots race to the Governor’s mansion. It helped honor the legacy of Paul Wellstone following his tragic death. The team maintained live coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic, and provided viewers a place to turn for information and context in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. As Almanac looks to the future, it remains committed to being that space where people can come for context and depth, with an animated story or history trivia mixed in for good measure. The team is considering how to bring their trusted approach to digital projects and reach new audiences who are interested in having conversations about the issues of today grounded in good facts and information. As Lahammer says, “ Almanac is uniquely Minnesotan.” It is not always predictable, but it is very engaged. Creating that trusted place is possible because the Almanac team is committed to their work. Many of the team members have been with the program for decades, allowing them to build relationships with people in the community, proving to candidates and experts that they will be treated fairly on the program and have time to explain the nuances of their positions. It is our job to be educational and informative in a world where there are alternative facts and confusing information and a lot of partisan sources.
Almanac ’s reach and breadth of coverage allows it to elevate stories to a statewide audience and create statewide conversations. Kari Kennedy, Almanac 's Associate Producer and Series Producer of Almanac at the Capitol has worked on political coverage for decades. She explains that what makes Almanac unique is that “it is a place where people who want to be civically engaged can come hear conversations about hot, contested topics like abortion, but especially in Almanac at the Capitol , we will talk with the people who are actually making the sausage at the Capitol" and help viewers understand what it takes to get policy made. The ability to provide analysis and detail sets Almanac and Almanac at the Capitol apart from other public affairs programs. As Henehan says,“Our superpowers are depth and context.” Mary Lahammer, Almanac ’s long-time political reporter and anchor of Almanac at the Capitol , explains that not all viewers would care about the context or the depth that Almanac pro- vides, but she notes that Minnesotans are “off the charts” when it comes to education levels, civic engagement, and voting, which makes them care about the information that Almanac and Almanac at the Capitol have to offer. She continues, “It is our job to be educational and informative in a world where there are alternative facts and confusing information

The Struggle Between Grace and Space in Caregiving By Amy McVay Abbott
My son doesn't drive or own a car, so we Ubered almost everywhere in the city. While I was familiar with the Metro, Dad could not handle the long escalators with his precarious balance. The trip was exceedingly challenging, and I was exhausted when we returned. After our conversation about going to the park, I asked Dad, “You are not going to go horseback riding, are you?” A long pause from Dad, “Well, I guess not.” I cannot imagine how he could mount a horse in his present condition. I checked the park's rules, and there is no maximum rider age. Am I wrong to express this concern?
My 92-year-old father announced that he and his 86-year-old girlfriend, sporting a brand-new titanium knee, were going to a state park for a three-day visit this fall. “Dad,” I asked him, “how will you get your luggage from the gravel parking lot and up the steps to the state park inn?” He said, “We've already thought of that. We'll take small bags and put them on our walkers.” Dad, who had traveled all his adult life until the pandemic, couldn't see any problem with it. He sometimes can’t get up from a chair and has an unsteady gait like Frankenstein's monster. I could see a problem with it. My father is frail, forgetful and feisty. I have a lung disease that limits my mobility and travel. However, many baby boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, still have a living parent as they themselves struggle with aging issues. In 2019, I took Dad to visit our son, his elder grand- son, in Washington, D.C. I use oxygen therapy and have trouble walking a long distance; my portable compressor and cord weigh about 11 pounds.
Am I wrong to express this concern? Should our grace to him extend to something my brother and I feel is entirely unsafe for Dad?
This situation is a difficult balance because I question his judgment. I'm 25 years younger and I have to make daily choices because of my oxygen compressor. You can't go zip-lining over a canyon while wearing an oxygen compressor. How mad would I be if my adult son needed to point this out to me? So, we err on the side of grace and space, and then cross our fingers.

Think Nobody Wants Your Parents’ Art? Think Again. By Richard Eisenberg
Auction houses won't likely be interested in your parents' art if the artist is unknown to them, which was my case. I contacted several local auction houses and sent photos of the paintings with the artists' names. I didn't get a nibble. Matt Paxton, host of public television's “Legacy List with Matt Paxton,” says: “Auction houses need big names, and the reality is you probably don't have them. But it doesn't mean [your inherited art pieces] don't have some financial value.”
Recently, when my wife Liz and I needed to unload art in her mother's beach condo, I wondered: Does anyone want your parents' art? After talking with experts, I learned it's quite possible that someone does . But to find that person or charity, you'll need to commit time and effort. Otherwise, you'll likely wind up junking the art, and that would be a shame. Exactly how much money you'll receive — if any — will depend on where you look for a buyer and the size, type and condition of the art and reputation of the artist. Fortunately, the internet, a few apps and Facebook have made it easier to snag a buyer or donate inherited art.
How to Unload Inherited Art
Odds are, you won't be saying Hello, Dali if you inherit art. But here's what to do if you suddenly must figure out what to do with your parents' art that you don't want to keep: Keep It in the Family. The art may have senti- mental value to a sibling or other family member. Art “is very personal,” says David Ekerdt, author of “Downsizing.” Prepare to Sell. Take photos of the art, artist's signature and frame. Measure the frame, too. A frame itself may have value, possibly more valuable than the art. “Sometimes, those frames are worth two hundred, three hundred or four hundred bucks,” says Paxton. “People will buy them.” Sell It Yourself. To sell art online yourself, experts say Facebook Marketplace is a good place to start. You can quickly see what similar pieces sell for, and posting photos of your art and your price, you'll know quickly if there are potential buyers. “If it doesn't sell in a day on Facebook Marketplace, it's not going to sell there,” says Paxton.
