Hymns in H um an Experience B y W il l ia m J . H art

The book recounts the conditions under which many of the great hymns of the church were written. It shows how, on many occasions, the singing of a hymn has changed a situation or wrought a moral victory. The importance of sacred song as a vehicle for God’s message is strongly emphasized. The book is most in terestingly written. As a source book of illustrations, it will be welcomed espe cially by preachers. 221 pages. Harper Bros. Cloth. Price $2.00. Bible Studies in th e L ight of R ecent R esearch B y A u g u s t u s W il l ia m A h l This introductory manual, intended es pecially for higher institutions of learn ing, will be useful to all thoughtful Bible students. It compares Christianity with other religions and contrasts the Bible with their sacred books. It contains brief summaries of the books of the Bible, also tables of the kings of Israel and of Ju dah. References to recent discoveries in Bible lands make the book up to date and add greatly to its value as a conservative, trustworthy manual. 354 pages. Christian Alliance Pub. Co. Cloth. Price $2.50. ■ The subtitle of this book is “A Mission ary’s Notes on a Missionary’s Letter.” The author became a missionary while still dominated by modernist training. Through a study of the subject of the Lord’s return, he was led to see the plan of God for this world, and he became an eager student, of the Bible. In the present volume, he has assembled much choice material and has illustrated it by inci dents which occurred on the mission field. 117 pages. Marshall, Morgan & Scott, Ltd. Cloth. Price $1.50. T he K ingdom of God B y I. M. H a l d e m a n

This is a review of Mr. Philip Mauro’s much discussed book, The Gospel of the Kingdom. Mr. Mauro’s book. repudiates all his earlier teaching on eschatology and virtually sets aside all eschatology as un derstood by careful Bible students. Dr. Haldeman’s volume is a masterful analy sis of Mr. Mauro’s. It shows that lan guage is emptied of its primary signifi cance, if the sure covenants made with David and with Israel are to be fulfilled only in the spiritual terms of the renewed life of the believer. Dr. Haldeman enters vigorously upon a defense of the Sco field Reference Bible and points out how accurately the notes interpret the text itself. With the major message of the book there will be most hearty agreement on the part of a great number of God’s children who love the Lord’s appearing, and who look for the establishment of the eternal kingdom. 253 pages. Francis Emory Fitch, New York. Cloth. Price $1.50. Steps on th e L adder of F aith B y J a m e s M. G ray It requires a master to take the lofty teachings of the Word of God and to present them in such simple terms that they may be understood by the average young Christian. The works of Dr. Gray, all of which may be described as among the strongest and most scholarly of Chris tian literature, are often regarded as adapted primarily to the needs of the ma ture Christian. In Steps on the Ladder of Faith he has proved himself a master in deed, for he has brought sublime truth within the reach of every earnest believer, whether learned or unlearned. “The smallest child can ascend the highest flight of stairs;-’ the author declares, “if you ask him to take only one step at a time.” Some of the chapters of the book were spoken to the young people of the Moody Bible Institute, of which Dr. Gray is the president. The book is a companion volume to My Faith in Jesus Christ. 175 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.50. A New S ho rt G ramm ar of th e G reek T estam ent B y A. T. R obertson a n d W . H ersey D avis This grammar presupposes an elemen tary knowledge of Greek. It gives large attention to the development of the com mon Greek spoken throughout the Med iterranean world in the time of Christ and the apostles. This was the language in which the New Testament was written. Changes in the direction of modern Greek were already at work, and New Testa ment Greek was not a special form of the language but was the vernacular of the people. The authors of this grammar have indicated the changes which the language underwent from classic times, and they have shed much light on New Testament idioms. . The book would be a valuable ad

The author is a skilled winner of souls, and his wide contacts with people have given him an inexhaustible supply of il lustrations from actual life. Young peo ple are in the same need of evangelical instruction today as were their parents. The Scriptures are made so plain in these pages that any reader who really desires a satisfying experience of salvation need not go astray for want of information. The theory is explained, and the practical outworkings are illustrated. 30 pages. Na tional Young Life Campaign, London. Paper. Price 25 cents. The subject of amusements requires kindly, skillful handling. It is easy, by harsh generalizations and by unfair con clusions, to hurt an inquirer rather than to help him. This booklet is Christian, generous, and fa ir; but it is unflinching in its condemnation of the things upon which the world has set its trademark of approval. Illustrations from life enforce the principles laid down. 39 pages. Na tional Young Life Campaign, London. Pa per. Price 25 cents. The great problems that confront the church and the world today are viewed in the light of Scripture. The author shows that the *rend of events is exactly in ac cord with the predictions made by God. Further, they show the unfolding of His plan for the world and for the Lord’s peo ple. This is a book that honors God’s Word and encourages one’s heart. 96 pages. Marshall,. Morgan & Scott, Ltd. Cloth. Price $1.25. John B unyan’s Pilgrim ’s P rogress Retold B y E. P algrave D avy

The author, who is the founder and superintendent of the New Zealand Chil dren’s Mission, gives in very attractive form the outstanding facts of John Bun yan’s life, and then retells the great story of the .pilgrim. He adheres to the lan guage of Bunyan, but simplifies his more abstract homilies and renders them more comprehensible to modern children. Oc casionally he introduces material of his own.. The book is quaintly illustrated- 147 pages. . Unity Press, Auckland,. N, Z Cloth. Price $1.50.
