ery great judgment upon a sinner is as the hanging of a man in chains, to deter others from a like practice, so every conversion is not only an act of God’s mercy to the convert, but an invitation to the specta tors,— S tephen C harnock . SEPTEMBER 3 “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace” (Heb. 4:16). The idea of a throne inspires awe, bor dering upon terror. It repels rather than invites. Few of us could approach it without trembling . . . The God we ad dress. is the King of kings. In His eye, an Alexander is a worm; yea, all nations before Him are less than nothing and vanity. How can we approach His in finite majesty? Blessed be His name! He is on a throne of grace, and we are allowed, and even commanded to come to it boldly.— W illiam J ay . SEPTEMBER 4 “Till we all come in the unity of the faith . . . unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ” (Eph. 4:13). Those things which promote and assure .faith shall be assiduously cultivated. Be cause we find that the Word of God helps the praying soul, we shall devoutly medi tate on the Word; and because we find fellowship with saints helps prayer, we shall cultivate the fellowship of saints; and because we find a mind toned by heavenly things stimulates prayer, we shall cultivate spirituality. —A. T. P ierson . SEPTEMBER 5 “A t midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the pris oners heard them” (Acts 16:25). Music is sweetest near or over rivers, where the echo thereof is best rebounded by the water. Praise for pensiveness, thanks for tears, and blessing God over the floods of affliction make the most melodious music in the ear of heaven. —T homas F uller . Many an alleluia That rings through the Father’s home Sobbed out its first rehearsal In the shades of a darkened room. —S elected . SEPTEMBER 6 “I lay down my life . . . No man taketh it from me” (John 10: 17, 18). Christ was so ready to die for us, that, before His enemies laid hands on Him, He laid hands on Himself, in the institu tion of the Lord’s Supper, when He sac ramentally tore H is own body, and broached His own heart; that His disci ples might not look upon His death as a mere butchery from man, but rather as a sacrifice in which He freely offered Himself to God.— S elected . SEPTEMBER 7 “God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross o f our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal. 6:14). The cross is the strength of a minister. I, for one, would not be without it for the world. I should feel like a soldier without Weapons, like an artist without his pencil, like a pilot without his com-

AUGUST 30 “Uphold me according to thy word” (Psa. 119:116). When George Peabody was staying at Sir Charles Reed’s house, he saw the youngest child bringing to his father a large Bible for family prayers. Mr. Pea body said, “Ah! my boy, you carry the Bible now; but the time is coming when you will find that the Bible must carry you.” “Speak to me now in Scripture lan- gauge alone,” said a dying Christian. “I can trust the words of God; but when they are the words of man, it costs me an effort to think whether or not I may trust them.”— S purgeon ’ s S ermon N otes . AUGUST 31 “All things are your’s; and ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s (1 Cor. 3:22, 23). What a rich inheritance have all those who are truly interested in Jesus Christ 1 They possess Him that is all in all, and in possessing Him they possess all . . . A true believer, let him be ever so poor outwardly, is in truth the richest man in all the world. He hath all in all; and what can be added to all ? —R alph R obinson . SEPTEMBER 1 “The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace” (Num. 6:26). Dennecker, the German sculptor, spent eight years in producing a face of Christ; and at last wrought out one in which the emotions of love and sorrow were so per fectly blended that beholders wept as they looked upon it. Subsequently, be ing solicited to employ his great talent on a statue of Venus, he replied, “After gazing so long into the face of Christ, think you that I can now turn my atten tion to a heathen goddess?” Here is the true secret of weanedness from worldly idols, “the expulsive power of a new af fection.” “I have heard the voice of Jesus, Tell me not of aught beside; I have seen the face of Jesus, And my soul is satisfied.” SEPTEMBER 2 “Behold, what manner of love the Fath er hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God” (1 John 3:1). Every conversion of a great sinner is a new copy of God’s love; it is a repeated proclamation of the transcendency of His grace. This was His design in Paul’s conversion. He sets up this apostle as a white flag to invite rebels to treat with Him and return to their loyalty. As ev- —A. J. G ordon .
