In this lively, discussion-based course, we’ll explore what civility really means in our communities, families, and friendships. Using ideas from P.M. Forni’s Choosing Civility, we’ll talk about kindness, respect, and how to keep our cool when the world tests our patience. Expect stories, reflection, laughter, and a few “aha” moments along the way as we rediscover the simple power of being civil. This four- week course ends April 15. Robyn Andrews works in Circulation/ Research Services for the Furman Libraries. She facilitates workshops on empathy, civility, DEI through a biblical lens and is the author of “Unseen Black History: 29 stories to celebrate Black History Month.” HIS429 Interesting Characters Wednesday, 1:30-3 p.m., Herring Center, Crabtree (HC110) Interesting Characters has a different subject and presenter each week. How did various empires that emerged over the course of history affect the Jewish people? What is the history of the Jews in European lands and in Islamic lands in medieval times? How did those Jewish communities relate to the land of Israel? How did the modern state of Israel form? What is modern Israel like today? What took place in the Arab-Israeli wars of 1948, 1967, 1973, and 2023? What are the Oslo Accords, and why did they fail? What role did the Soviet Union play in the Arab- Israeli conflict? What is modern Israel like today? Required reading: “The Ten Big Anti-Israel Lies and How to Refute Them with the Truth” by Alan Dershowitz (ISBN 9781510783546); “Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth” by Noa Tishby (ISBN 9781982144944). Esther Pittman has a doctorate from Harvard University and was a tenured, full Professor of Organizational Behavior & Management. She has spent the last five years immersing herself in the facts of the Arab–Israeli conflict and Israel's history, and has spent over 1,000 hours creating this course. Esther's parents are Holocaust survivors. PAH841 Everyday Zentangle (IP) Wednesday, 1:30-3 p.m., Herring Center, Campbell (HC004) The term Everyday Zentangle suggests not only doing Zentangle drawing every day but also having your Zentangle drawing be comfortable and familiar and a regular activity to do. Sometimes, however, when one is drawing one pattern and another, one’s mind goes blank and cannot remember a thing! This class will provide the perfect solution for that situation – a Tangle Spinner!! The Spinner is a giant wheel filled with patterns and a spinnable arrow which can point to patterns to use to proceed with your drawing. We

This course will introduce you to the Italian language and culture and give you a basic knowledge of the language, with an emphasis on speaking and listening in a variety of travel situations. Make your visit to Italy memorable as you engage with Italians in their native language. This is a beginner class, and no prior knowledge of Italian is necessary. A copy fee of $5 is due to the instructor at the first class. NOTE: If you took this course previously, we ask that you not repeat in order to allow more members an opportunity to enroll. Ron Blitstein spent 4 years immersed in the culture and language of Italy while in the Air Force. He has extended his Italian experience through college-level Italian classes and multiple return trips to Italy. He considers travel not just seeing the sights but being able to interact with the people who live there. Lynne Blitstein has traveled to Italy numerous times and is learning Italian (with Ron's help). She is a retired teacher. PAH844 Woodcarving 201 Wednesday, 1-4 p.m., Herring Center, Graham (HC005) Prerequisite for this class is Woodcarving 101 or having some woodcarving experience. You should be able to maintain sharp tools and have proper safety equipment. Returning students will have projects or request new ones that will be supplied. New students will choose a project available or be assigned one to get started. Assorted carving tools will be available for use. Painting and finishing options will be discussed towards the end of term. Methods to keep tools sharp will be covered. The materials fee will cover all projects provided by the instructor. Materials fee: $35 (due to instructor at first class). Kent Ellison has been carving since 2003 and has won numerous awards in competitions. He is a 20-year member of the Piedmont Wood Carvers Club. Kent has been teaching at OLLI and elsewhere since 2006.
