As a youth he kicked up Native American artifacts behind his grandfather's plow. One find, an arrow point found in his grandparents' front yard, spawned a decades- long quest to understand why a piece of shaped rock judged by experts to be 7,000 years old, was in this place. He discovered other private collectors who had more ancient treasures. As evidence mounted, Jim came to believe there had been human activity where he now lives continuously for as long as 10,000 years. Yet when Europeans settled this land, there is no documentary record of native people living in this place. What happened to them? A deep dive into the research findings of other investigators yielded a plausible hypothesis for their disappearance. Jim's findings build upon a growing consensus among Paleo-archaeologists that has pushed estimates of human habitation here well beyond 10,000 years. One thing is clear: The Cherokee, an Iroquois people migrating from the North American heartland, were relative newcomers to the region.
