What exactly is this “Electric Grid” we hear about? Why is the Grid essential for reliable electric service? How can electric generators hundreds of miles away possibly get electricity into my home for my morning coffee? How can over 3000 Electric Companies be connected together? This will be a non-technical program with less detail on what electricity actually is, and more discussion on the components of the Grid and how it operates to reliably deliver electric power to your home. We will explore the evolution of electric power grids and discuss what needs to be done to accommodate the growth of solar and wind power while reducing consumption of carbon-based fuels. There will also be Q&A at the end for curious minds. You will never again look up at power lines and have to wonder how electric energy gets to your home. Bill McCann is a retired electric and gas utility executive who has taught various OLLI classes on energy. He explains complex subjects in an easy to understand manner for all levels of interest. Cheryl Cotner, a degreed chef in culinary arts and hospitality management, will lead this course. Participants will make three different salads using spring greens and other seasonal produce. In this class, participants will learn shortcuts, the importance of presentations, and a few kitchen skills. The class recipes will be shared with you. Limit 23 BTE114 A Visit to the Historic Kilgore Lewis House April 17, 10 a.m.-noon, Offsite The historic 1838 Kilgore-Lewis House is the headquarters of the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. It is the only historic home in Greenville open to the public. House docents provide visitors a glimpse into the history of early Greenville furnishings and home life. This home is on the National Registry of Historic Places and is furnished with period pieces. The Arboretum has 5.4 acres of native trees and flowers. The property also features a natural artesian well and stream that was a water source for indigenous people and early settlers. The 2-hour tour will consist of a history of the house from 1838 to today and a tour of the gardens.There is a $5 fee to tour the house and property. Limit 20 BTE115 The Life and Death of Harry Houdini April 17, 1-2:30 p.m., RGV During his lifetime, Harry Houdini was perhaps the most famous American in the world. Growing up in poverty, the son of a Rabbi in Appleton, Wisconsin, he was able to achieve worldwide fame as an illusionist, mentalist, magician, and perhaps best known as an escape artist. In the years before TV and talking movies, he was able to capture the imagination of audiences all over the world by barnstorming cities large and small, performing acts that left audiences on five continents totally mystified and entertained. But he was more than just an entertainer. Join us to find out more about his life, his determination to make headlines, his desperate desire to explore the spirit world, and his mysterious death 100 years ago, on October 31, 1926. In the seven years since his retirement, Jim Maurer has taught a number of Friday Bonus Classes as well as several Interesting Characters in History. Limit 50

Did you know we have tea grown right here in the Upstate? Table Rock Tea is uniquely American tea found just around the corner from Furman in Pickens, SC. Come learn how leaves from the same tea plant are processed to make green, oolong, and black tea. We will see how tea is grown from greenhouse to mature bushes and have an opportunity to purchase tea products and tea plants. When they were in Kenya, where 20% of the world’s tea is grown, Steve and Jennifer Lorch fell in love with tea and decided to start a tea company right here in the Upstate of South Carolina. With no previous experience in growing tea, they have learned everything first hand. Their sense of mission runs deep – 10% of all sales goes to charity. Money required for tea products and lunch, if desired. Limit 40
