Polar Cruising: Antarctica & The Arctic 2023

For travelers that are considering their first trip to Antarctica, what suggestions or advice would you have for them? In spite of increased supply (more ships and larger ships), it’s still very wise to start planning and “doing your homework” 18 months or even two years in ad - vance. Why? To secure the departure date you want, the ship or company you want, the budget (price) you want, the cabin category you want, you need to book early! Some operators offer early booking discounts, which can be substantial, but these might end as much as a year in advance of departure. The internet makes this research relatively easy and fun. For travelers who haven’t yet been to the polar regions, it’s also a good idea to talk with the major expedition ship wholesalers – these are agencies that are familiar with all of the Antarctic operators are who can help you make the right choice. They’re easy to find, as most of the good ones rank high on internet searches for Antarctic travel or Antarctic cruises. Most operators provide you with a warm parka as part of the ticket price, as well as Wel - lington-style boots to use while you are aboard. Aside from those items, the most important piece of clothing to pack would be waterproof pants! Whatever ship you choose, you can rest assured that you will get plenty of help with what to pack, how to dress and so forth...

What makes Poseidon Expeditions different than other expedition companies? With its comfortable and nimble Sea Spirit, Poseidon is one of the few companies that still operates a vessel to Antarctica with only about 100 passengers. This is an important consideration when choosing an Antarc - tic expedition ship for the simple reason that only 100 guests are allowed on shore at a landing site at one time, as per Antarctic Treaty requirements. When you consid - er that a visit ashore might last just four or five hours, this translates into more time ashore. We also market internationally, so you’re likely to be traveling with oth - er curious guests like yourself, but from Australia, the UK, Germany, Taiwan, Canada, and other countries. We think that’s appropriate and fun when visiting a conti - nent without sovereign rule. Of course, we also have a great expedition staff who provide guiding ashore and engaging presentations onboard, large cabins and great food. You’ll be comfortable and well-entertained as you go about pursuing your sense of adventure! n
