EXPLORING THE FAR REACHES OF THE EARTH

The Arctic is one of the world’s most extraordinary regions famous for its dramatic landscapes, uninhabited valleys and fascinating wildlife. The rugged, remote Arctic remains one of the most unexplored parts of our planet. This ice-laden region encompasses the Canadian High Arctic, Greenland, the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, Russia and, at the very top of the planet, the North Pole. Arctic inhabitants include polar bears, muskoxen, arctic foxes, beluga whales, reindeer, seals, walruses and migratory birds. Explore fjords, glaciers, tundra, ice- laden waterways and remote communities in the Land of the Midnight Sun. ARCTIC EXPEDITIONS

ANTARCTIC EXPEDITIONS What will you see on your Antarctic journey? Sights change rapidly during the austral summer season. Local flora and fauna must pack a lot of living into these few warm months, so each cruise departure is, in effect, traveling to a different Antarctica, Falklands, or South Georgia Island. November to early December offers the spectacular courtship rituals of penguins and seabirds, wildflowers on the Falklands and South Georgia, and the highest level of research activity. Mid-December to January see the emergence of penguin chicks and seal pups, escalating whale sightings, and longer days creating incredible light conditions for photography. February to March brings whale sightings at their best, blooming snow algae, and increasingly numerous fur seals on the Antarctic Peninsula.

ANTARCTIC WILDLIFE

Although Antarctica may seem inhospitable for humans with its extreme weather, many animals find it to be a haven that they are perfectly adapted to survive in and even to thrive in. Antarctica has an abundance of rich and diverse wildlife, which makes it one of the most pristine and wild places to visit on earth. With penguins, sea birds, seals and whales living side by side, you're likely to see certain breeds on certain voyages. As the animal life are dependent on the sea and are mainly warm blooded, they tend to be fairly large as a survival technique against the extreme and relentless cold. Antarctic expeditions can get you close to the animals, on land or in the sea.

ARCTIC WILDLIFE There are over 5,500 species of animals that live in the Arctic. For the purposes of this guide, we're including the most common animals found throughout the Arctic region. Many arctic animals have adapted over time to deal with the extreme cold. Some of these animals include the harp seal, walrus, arctic fox, reindeer, beluga whale and narwhal. If you're a bird lover, there are over 280 species of birds that live in the Arctic. No arctic expedition would be complete without a polar bear sighting. Polar bears are located throughout the Arctic region. It's estimated that only 35,000 are still left in the wild.

It provides a platform for them to hunt, live, breed, and create maternal dens. Can be found in: small numbers in Greenland (Phippsoya and Isbukta), Spitsbergen, Franz Josef Land, around the Kara Sea and Canada. 11. Walrus With a 6" layer of insulating tissue, a walrus can weigh up to 3700 pounds. They use their tusks to pull themselves out of the water onto land. Can be found in : Kapp Lee, Spitzbergen, Franz Josef Land and Canada. 12. Musk Ox Usually found in the far north of Greenland, they move around during the different seasons to find food. They have 2 layers of fur, an inner and outer coat, to endure the freezing temperatures. Can be found in : Eastern Greenland, Svalbard and Canada. 13. Arctic Wolf A sub-species of the grey wolf, the arctic wolf is the only species not threatened by hunting or habitat destruction. It lives in 5 months of darkness throughout the year. Can be found in: Arctic regions of North America and Greenland. 14. Svalbard Reindeer One of the smallest of all reindeer types, both the males and females have antlers that are shed each year. They can reach speeds of up to 80 mph when they choose to run but normally live a fairly sedentary lifestyle. Can be found in : Svalbard. 15. Bearded Seals These are the largest species of Arctic seal, growing to 7-8 feet and weighing 600-800 pounds. Their long white whiskers make them easily recognizable. Can be found in : Greenland, Barents Sea and parts of the North Atlantic. 16. Arctic Fox The Arctic Fox can live in temperatures as low as -58 degrees F. During the summer, their pure white fur turns grey. They have excellent hearing which allows them to locate and catch prey. Can be found in : Canada and Greenland but because they live in burrows, they are rarely sighted. 17. Arctic Hare Nicknamed the "polar rabbit", the Arctic Hare has long, strong claws used for digging in the snow, smaller ears that help retain body heat and 2 fur coats - one short, thick undercoat and a thick, white topcoat. Can be found in : Greenland and the north Canadian Arctic islands.

Puffins 1.

The puffin spends two-thirds of the year at sea. Their beaks change color seasonally so if you're looking for one in winter, don't look for the bright red bill – look for one a little bit more grey in color. Can be found in : Iceland, Westfjords and Greenland.

2. Common Eider

4. Purple sandpiper

They have short yellow legs and their feathers have a subtle purple sheen. Can be found: Arctic Ocean islands, Spitsbergen and parts of Baffin Bay.

5. Barnacle Goose These white-and-black geese build their nests at the top of cliffs, away from predators such as Arctic foxes and polar bears. Can be found : in eastern Greenland, Svalbard, Canada and Novaya Zemlya during breeding season.

Whales

6. Minke Whales Minke whales can grow to nearly 35 feet in length and can weigh nearly 10 tons. They are curious animals that like to approach ships. Can be found : off eastern Greenland, the Arctic Ocean, Barents Island and Kara Sea. 7. Bowhead Whale A marine beast with a large triangular skull to break through ice, they have the thickest blubber, longest lifespan, lowest core body temperature and greatest number of 'songs' than any other whale. Can be found: across Arctic waters from west of Greenland to the Barents Sea. 8. Narwhal They have a large ‘tusk’ (actually a tooth), so that’s how you’ll be able to tell them apart from other marine animals. Can be found: all year round in Arctic waters around Greenland, Canada and Russia. 9. Beluga Whale Belugas are small, toothed whales. They are gray when they are born and turn white as they age. They're very social and usually form pods in groups of about 10. They're very vocal and use a whole range of sounds to communicate and are known to mimic what they hear. Can be found: in the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Svalbard and Greenland and Canada.

THE POLAR REGIONS MOST LUXURIOUS SHIP, SILVERSEA’S SILVER ENDEAVOUR, IS ABOUT TO BECOME EVEN MORE LUXURIOUS

BY MONTE MATHEWS

Roberto Bruzzone, Silversea’s Senior Vice President of Marine Operations explains “With our guests’ ex- perience in mind, we will also create space for the ad- ditional crew members our new accommodations will require maintaining our guest to passenger ratio of 1:1.” All of these changes will be made in time to welcome guests on Silver Endeavour’s itineraries starting in June 2023. The ship will first offer two voyages in the British Isles and Iceland before setting sail for her first Arctic season. Nine voyages are planned to include many of the Polar Region’s most remote destinations—Pond Inlet in Nunavut in Northern Canada, Cape York and Qaanaaq in Greenland. Her 2023 Antarctica season begins at the end of October. Let’s look at Silver Endeavour’s glorious new suites. Two new suite categories will allow Silver Endeav- our’s guests even more options in selecting their ac- commodations. In addition, another four Classic Veranda Suites will be added. The two Master suites will take your breath away. Located toward the ship’s aft, these amazing suites bring their occupants even stronger connections with Silver Endeavour’s desti- nations. They each provide uninterrupted 270-degree views from their enormous 312-square foot verandas. Inside, their large living areas have been designed with panoramic vaulted glazing. Featuring both living and dining areas, guests will relish all that’s contained in their 1,160 square feet. The bedrooms offer the choice of king size or twin beds. Silversea is justly famous for its walk-

In just one season, Silver Endeavour raised the bar in polar cruising. Her 200 guests experienced Silver Endeavour’s remarkable number of firsts. Silver Endeavour has the highest crew to guest ratio (of 1:1), Zodiac-to-guest, expert-to-guest ratios in the industry. Her cutting-edge navigation and exploration technology is unrivalled. But it is Silversea’s unmatched commitment to comfort that makes Silver Endeavour the most luxurious expe- dition ship ever built. Remarkably, Silver Endeavour is about to become even more spectacular than before. Just this week, Silver Endeavour will enter Genova’s San Giorgio del Porto shipyard for a series of enhance- ments in both onboard and expedition experiences for guests on the 20,449 ton vessel. Given that Silver Endeavour was only launched in 2021, these changes reflect the success of the ship among her passengers. In response to demand for the ship’s most spacious accommodations, Silver Endeavour will have six new Upper level suites on deck 8, four new suites on deck 5 and will introduce two new suite categories—all designed to immerse her passengers even deeper into their destinations. Silver Endeavour’s enrichment does not stop at her new accommodations.

20

in closets and beautiful bathrooms. Here they feature both a walk-in shower and separate whirlpool bath. In the living room, a convertible sofa is quickly made up into a third bed should it be requested. The four Signature Suites are next in size. Measuring from 721 to 850 square feet, they fea- ture the luxury of space. Their open living and dining room areas are light-filled sanctuaries. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow guests to admire Silver Endeavour’s destinations and even extend to the expansive bedroom. Replete with both a walk-in shower and whirlpool bath, the bathrooms are sanctuaries. Their walk-in closets are large enough for cold weather gear. And then there are the verandas. Between 167 to 269 square feet, these are ideal spots to relax and admire the ever-changing views. Finally, there are four new Classic Veranda Suites. These suites will be familiar to Silversea’s ever-growing repeat guests. They are treasured for their traditional layout, features and amenities that bring them back to Silversea time after time. At 365 square feet with 52 square foot verandas, they represent Silversea’s trademark level of comfort.

But that’s not all… New guest accommodations mean a need for new crew cabins. Seven will be employed in the hotel team just to maintain Silversea’s unparalleled service standards. And the extra cabins will also mean an opportunity to enlarge the ship’s expedition team to 22—all of whom give guests an even richer immersion on whatever expedition itinerary they choose. Not to be forgotten, Silver Endeavour will recieve another Silversea hallmark: Handcrafted Lalique crystal panels will be installed in La Dame— Silversea’s signature French Restaurant. Even at the ends of the earth, guests will experience one of the most elegant fine dining experiences at sea. n

The Changing Face of Antarctic Travel and Its Sustainability

Steve Wellmeier Director of Special Projects, Poseidon Expeditions USA

You’ve had a very interesting career, from helping with the recovery from 9/11 to working in the travel industry, becoming the Executive Director of IAA - TO and now as the Managing Director of Poseidon Expeditions. Through the years, how have you seen Antarctic travel change? While I’d been involved in small ship cruising since 1983, my first exposure to polar cruising began in 1997 after I was recruited back to Clipper Cruise Line as vice president of marketing. Clipper had just purchased the Alla Tarasova, which was previously a Russian research vessel. She was typical of the small ice-class vessels that were traveling to Antarctica in those days – former Russian ships that came available with the fall of the Iron Curtain. Clipper spent $13 million, a huge investment at the time, to customize the ship and the resulting Clipper Adventurer was considered one of the nicer expedition vessels at the turn of the 21st century. Adventure travelers then were looking primarily for comfort, safety and the educational elements of remote polar environments; the more luxurious aspects that have become more important in the past decade weren’t given a second thought by most customers, even the well-heeled. Visitation to Antarctica had steadily increased to around 45,000

by the 2007-08 season, but then dropped off for near - ly a decade for two reasons. First, the recession of 2008 and 2009 cut deeply into the travel market, with visitor numbers dropping to only around 26,000 by 20 12. Second, the sinking of an expedition ship in November 2007 in Antarctic waters – fortunately, there were no fatalities – forced a rethinking by the Antarctic Treaty Parties, responsible for regulating the Antarctic environment, and by the companies in the polar market. These events initiated a pause in new ship construction and brought about changes in the regulatory environ - ment as well as a turn in how the next generation of customers wanted to experience the polar regions. Larger ships, in the range of 200-plus, became the norm. Luxury brands like Silversea and Seabourn, along with new players like Scenic and Viking, entered the marketplace. The older re-purposed Russian vessels began to fall by the wayside. In the past few years, there’s been a growing emphasis – beyond the basic educational aspects that were always the cornerstones of passenger activities – on luxury accommodations, balconies, white-glove service, gourmet food and new “toys” such as helicopters and submersibles.

32

Do you think that travel to the polar regions is sustainable? Yes, it’s my belief––and that of most of the other Antarctic operators that belong to IAATO (the International Associa - tion of Antarctic Tour Operators)––that tourism is sustain - able and will continue to have no more than a minor or tran - sitory impact on the Antarctic environment. This is baked into the IAATO mission statement (found on the IAATO website), and we as a collective group have no intention of seeing it change, in spite of the growth of Antarctic tourism post-pandemic. While the ship operators now catering to demand in the marketplace are diverse in size and in the types of passenger vessels used, we work together to de - velop and promote best practices in the field and marine environment, carbon and plastic reduction, and the educa - tion of guests, among other things. Similarly, we all cooper - ate through IAATO to develop an extensive database that accurately tracks site visits, passenger activities, scheduling and other data points. This provides a comprehensive view of tourism, past and present, and allows us to see where we are going and where adjustments may need to be made. On behalf of its members, IAATO maintains a respectful yet pragmatic relationship with the Antarctic Treaty Parties, who ultimately have responsibility for management of Ant - arctica. Antarctic tourism is our livelihood, and if we can’t meaningfully deliver on the sustainability front, there simply won’t be a future for Antarctic tourism.

... only 100 guests are allowed on shore at a landing site at one time... " "

What can we be doing now to help preserve those areas and keep them sustainable? IAATO and its members have been at work on preservation, conservation and education since the organization was founded in 1991. There’s no question that objectives were simpler back then, but as supply, demand and environmental awareness have increased, we recognize that more resources need to be devoted to these efforts. Along these same lines, safety protocols have continually been beefed up, both by the self-regulatory requirements of IAATO and the rules and guidelines imposed by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) and the Antarctic Treaty System. IAATO annually publishes and reviews site guidelines for an ever-increasing number of landing spots in the Antarctic Peninsula region; we follow careful protocols to prevent the introduction of invasive species; our vessels are regularly audited by independent observers for compliance with agreed standards; and we’ve pledged as a collective to reduce our carbon footprint in the decades ahead. And those are just a few of our efforts…
