Meet the 83-Year-Old Who Crossed the Pacific Solo You're Never Too Old to Explore

FROM THE DESK OF Mike Bryan

Hello everyone!

So, there have been many newsworthy events in the past month or two regarding Medicaid and VA Benefits, but one of the most important events was the signing of the Honoring our Pact Act on August 10th, 2022. Within that act, is the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, which actually permits a lawsuit to be filed against the military for exposure to toxic substances and to pursue money damages based upon that exposure. In order to pursue a claim, you must have served, lived or worked at Camp LeJeune for at least 30 days between 8/1/1953 and 12/31/87. After that time, if you have been diagnosed with various types of cancer, Parkinson’s disease or other neurologic conditions, then you may have the ability to pursue a claim. If you or anyone you know served at Camp LeJeune during this timeframe, please let them know about the passage of this Act as soon as possible. Contact our office if you have questions and

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend among my friends lately. All of a sudden, they seem to think they’re “too old” to do the things they dreamed of as kids.

Backpacking through Europe is out because they’re “too old” to stay in hostels or carry everything they need on their backs. That safari in Africa is never going to happen, either, because they’re “too old” to sleep in a tent and cook over a fire. The list goes on and on! These folks in their 30s, 40s, and 50s have already decided to stay home because life has passed them by. Excuse my language, but that’s a bunch of B.S. Unless you’re in the middle of a health crisis, you’re never too old to try something new or explore a new place. Whenever I doubt this, I just think about Henichi Horie. He set a Guinness World Record this summer for being the oldest person to sail the Pacific Ocean solo. And he’s not in his 30s, 40s, or 50s. He’s 83! Horie’s story is truly inspiring. His achievement this summer wasn’t the first record he’s ever set. In 1962, he became the first person to sail solo across the Pacific Ocean, crossing from his home country of Japan to California. The journey took him 94 days. He was a 23-year-old used car parts salesman at the time.

This is my favorite part of that story: According to The Good News Network, “When he arrived under the Golden Gate Bridge … he was promptly arrested,

might start saying it to my friends next time they gripe about their responsibilities and bad backs holding them back in life!

as he had neither a passport nor money. When Mayor George Christopher heard what he had done, though, he gave Horie an honorary visa, and he became a mini-celebrity.” Apparently, his boat from that journey is still on display at the National Maritime Museum in California 60 years later! Between his two record-breaking voyages, Horie crossed the Pacific many more times. He has achieved the feat in boats made from all kinds of things, including recycled materials. Sailing is his way of advocating for environmental protections for the ocean, and he plans to keep going

Horie is far from the only senior citizen who holds a world record. According to Insider, 68-year-old George Hood holds the record for assuming the plank position for the longest time (over eight hours), Albert Hughs Jr. is considered the world’s oldest boxer at 70, and 84-year-old Shirley Curry (aka “Grandma Gamer”) is

until he’s 100 years young. This is a man who truly doesn’t believe in the concept of being “too old.” Ever since I first read Horie’s story on CNN, something he said has stuck with me: “Don’t let your dreams just stay as dreams. Have a goal and work toward achieving this, and a beautiful life awaits.” I just

Next time you catch yourself thinking you’re “too old” for something fun or challenging, remember Horie. If an 83-year- old can spend two months alone in a boat setting a record on the Pacific, you can do that TikTok dance with your grandkids or take your first bite of sushi. I promise

it’s not too late.

Eva’s Stand-Off With a Mountain Lion This Belgian Malinois Needs a Cape

rocks in an attempt to break its hold. When that didn’t work, she ran back to her truck and managed to wave down a passing motorist. With their combined efforts — and a crowbar and lots of pepper spray — they were able to scare the mountain lion away. Wilson, though wounded, managed to carry Eva back to her truck and raced her to an animal hospital. Thankfully, Eva didn’t need surgery but still had some extensive injuries. Wilson said she would do anything for her dog, and that day, Eva proved she would do the same for Wilson.

A commonly uttered phrase among dog lovers is that we don’t deserve them. This comes from the fact that dogs often give their all to protect their owners, even if that means putting their own lives at risk. Dogs seem to be instinctively wired to protect their humans — and it’s more proof they really are our best friends. In May 2022, Erin Wilson pulled off at a roadside picnic area and headed down a path toward the Trinity River in California with her Belgian Malinois, Eva. As Wilson walked down the slope, the dog ran ahead. Suddenly, Wilson turned around and realized she was being cornered by a mountain lion. These attacks are incredibly rare due to the mountain lion’s reclusive and shy nature. In fact, since 1890, California has recorded only six fatal mountain lion attacks. However, recent drought conditions have made food scarce in some areas. Their preferred prey is deer, but these conditions probably made the sudden appearance of a slender woman look like an attractive option. The mountain lion growled and took a swipe at Wilson’s left shoulder. As it lunged at her, Wilson screamed and shouted for Eva. At the distressed call of her owner, the dog came running back to Wilson’s aid. Without hesitation, Eva leapt between Wilson and tackled the wild cat. During the short tussle, the mountain lion managed to get its jaws around Eva’s head, but Wilson fought to free her dog by throwing

5 Smart Financial Tactics to Use During a Recession

on recurring payments for things they no longer need! Double-check your statements for anything you might’ve forgotten about. No. 3: Get rid (or don’t use) high debt credit cards. Canceling a credit card can have some temporary consequences on your credit score, but if you can afford it — or need to remove the temptation altogether — cancel credit cards with high interest rates. Get a card with 0% APR if you need time to pay off new purchases before interest kicks in. No. 4: Boost your emergency fund ASAP. In life, setbacks can happen when least expected — and least wanted. This is the time for cushioning the fall in case you have any large unexpected expenses that could have major consequences on you and your family’s livelihood. No. 5: Roll over to a Roth IRA during the market downturn. Since IRA contributions are invested into the market, the downturn makes it cheaper to transition your after-tax traditional IRA into a pre-tax Roth IRA, which means you’ll keep the full dollar amount of your account in retirement. According to Clark Kendall, certified financial planner and CEO of wealth management firm Kendall Capital, transitioning into a Roth IRA may “cost 20% less if your retirement account is down 20%.” Put these tips in your back pocket — they just might help get you through any economic climate!

Inflation can make people nervous about the future. Here are a few smart ways to manage your money in any economic climate — but especially during a recession. No. 1: Make every dollar count. This year, the price of gas has climbed considerably, but what should you do when driving is part of your job? Dan Varroney, founder of consulting firm Potomac Core and expert on economic performance, told NBC that people can stretch their dollar by utilizing mass transportation, carpooling, or walking. You can also combine trips with multiple stops or shop locally to save on gas and time in the long run. No. 2: Check your spending. The internet is full of trendy subscription-model brands and products, but are you still paying for ones you aren’t using? A 2021 Chase survey revealed that two-thirds of consumers have forgotten about at least one recurring payment in the last year. In fact, more than 70% of consumers waste over $50 every month

craggy peaks and luscious landscape do not disappoint, and sometimes there is no sign of human development for miles. It’s a truly remote and beautiful place to visit and explore. You are sure to encounter some amazing wildlife while hiking or camping — the park is home to more than 60 species of mammals and 300 species of birds. Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming Specifically known for being remote, Bighorn National Forest is located in north-central Wyoming and offers over 192,000 acres of open wilderness and 1,200 miles of hiking trails to venture out on. The forest contains many meadows and grasslands surrounded by large, dancing mountains and rolling hills. The best part is that there are many different ways to explore Bighorn National Forest. Because of the popularity of the Kevin Costner miniseries “Yellowstone,” the state of Montana is seeing an economic boom, both in tourism and real estate, as people flock to explore the natural beauty of the state. But with Montana’s increasing popularity, traveling there may not be ideal, especially if you want to avoid crowds. Here are some other destinations that offer similar sights and activities! Stanley, Idaho If the mountains are calling your name, then Stanley, Idaho, is the place to go! About three hours northeast of Boise, this gem has three different mountain ranges: the Sawtooth, Lost River, and Whitecloud. This trifecta is home to whitewater rafting, hiking, sightseeing, rock climbing, mountain biking, and exploring. While there’s tons to see and experience during the day, the beauty doesn’t stop at night. As Stanley is situated in the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, you’re able to see so much more in the night sky, such as the Milky Way, meteors, and even planets! Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming In Grand Teton National Park, you’ll find many sights and wildlife similar to those seen on screen in “Yellowstone.” The towering
