ABOUT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE Home to The Royal Ballet, The Royal Opera and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the Royal Op- era House brings together world-class performers and trailblazing creative teams to share unforgettable per- formances with audiences near and far. Our theatres are in London’s Covent Garden, but our work is accessed and experienced across the UK and globally through tours, cinema seasons, free outdoor screenings, radio broadcasts, TV programmes and on Royal Opera House Stream. Over the course of the pandemic, we curated the #Our- HouseToYourHouse programme made up of nine live- streamed concerts and 38 full-length streamed produc- tions from our archives. Full-length content was viewed over 15 million times in 183 countries, and was paired with a host of cultural highlights in partnership with the BBC, Sky Arts, Marquee T and Netflix. We returned for our first full Season following the pan - demic in September 2021, sharing a packed programme of world premieres, landmark new productions and re-
turning favourites. Since then, we have expanded our au- dience through a flagship Young ROH scheme, returned to live cinema relays, and extended our national impact through an ambitious curriculum-linked programme for schools, specially designed to ignite creativity, broaden participation and diversify the future of opera and ballet. We realise our responsibility and obligation to reduce our impact on the environment, and are committed to net zero emissions by 2035 for Scopes 1 and 2, and to setting targets for our Scope 3 emissions by 2025. We are one of the busiest theatres in the world, deliver- ing over 400 performances and around 1,350 learning events each year, employing 1,000 permanent staff and generating a turnover of £142 million and attracting 1.5m attendances in Covent Garden and in cinemas, further extended via broadcasting, digital activity and collaboration with touring companies. THE ESTATE The Estates of the Royal Opera House comprises three buildings: the main site in Covent Garden includes a 2,000+ seat- ed theatre which dates from 1858, and redeveloped stage and newly developed rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, work- shops offices and ancillary spaces sating from a large-scale capital project com- pleted in 1999, and a second theatre and refreshed front of house spaces delivered via the Open Project in 2018. The ROH’s Production Workshop and Costume Centre are located in Thurrock, Essex and a 14,000m2 store in Aberdare, Wales. Together the facilities enable the organ- isation to deliver a complex and busy production schedule and support the work of 1,000s staff, artists and creative people to stage opera and ballet to exact- ing standards.

THE ROLE
The Engineering Maintenance Manager will manage an in-house Engineering team and 3rd party specialist contractors in the delivery and implementation of the planned preventative maintenance and emergency reactive maintenance across all Royal Opera House sites. The incumbent will provide leadership and manage the engineering team to be customer-focused by developing a positive image and reputation for delivery of services provided. We are seeking an individual with proven experience of leading engineering maintenance teams across a comparable, live, operational complex estate portfolio. The role calls for an individual with exceptional stakeholder engagement who is proactive and engaging in approach.

Main purpose of the job To provide and be responsible for: • To manage the in-house Engineering team and 3rd party specialist contractors in the delivery and implementation of the planned preventative maintenance and emergency reactive maintenance across Royal Opera House properties. • To Manage and develop the operational engineering team’s working practices to meet the challenges from best value/value for money, legislation, and end user’s expectations. • To prioritise engineering staff workloads and meet timescales for all functions. • To ensure that all maintenance asset data is recorded within the CAFM system and other compliance systems. • Ensure that the appropriate maintenance tasks are completed on all maintainable assets. • To develop and manage the engineering team to be customer focused by developing a positive image and reputation for delivery of services provided. • To assist the Head of Estates Engineering
Services and Engineering Manager in the management of the Estates Engineering team and service providers to include engineering, Stage engineering support services and security, ensuring Health & Safety and compliance duties are met and the highest level of customer experience provided. • Ensure that the Estates service providers are efficient and cost effective and adaptable to the business and artists needs of the ROH. • Support the development of BIM function across all buildings. • Support engineering Project work as directed by Head of Estates Engineering Services as required, to include but not limited to, Renewal, Sustainability, closed period and minor project work. • To act as the Authorised/Responsible Person (Subject to training and certification) in relation to HV/LV, Ventilation Systems, Pressure Systems, Legionella and L8. Lifts and Hoists, Gas Safe and confined spaces. • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous development to maximise potential. Maintain
a sound working knowledge of all relevant legislation, keeps abreast of new technical developments to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of the section's services. • Liaise with and support the work of the Project Team as required in connection with works to provide connection to the main building engineering services. Facilitates these connections including arranging shutdowns of services and means of isolation. • Manage the operational maintenance team and deliver safe, reliable, and compliant operational maintenance of all building services within the ROH and its subsidiary buildings. • Provide technical support and direction for the maintenance team and external contractors working across ROH estates. • Support the Stage Engineering contract for provision of Stage support services. Main Responsibilities Functional responsibilities: • Support the Estates Business Services Manager with the management of the Estates Contractor
control procedures including Permit to Work Systems, ensuring only safe and compliant works are carried out on sites. • Ensure the maintenance of all Front of House spaces to the highest standards. • Provide support to the Head of Estates Engineering Services in maintaining building integrity, maintaining accurate records and design drawings as required. • Support the Engineering Manager in ensuring all engineering insurance inspections are completed and all recommendations actioned. • Work closely with the Energy Manager to ensure all engineering plant across all sites is operating at required performance. • Ensure all plant rooms and plant areas are clean, tidy, and compliant. Emergency Contact • Be on call as required for E&F (or maintain that service with other qualified team members if absent) as required for any emergencies which may occur.
Essential Knowledge/Skills and Experience: • An exceptional, extensive, and proven track record in a similar role. • Degree qualified engineer/ building professional, or proven competence through practical experience. • A detailed knowledge of the working practices and demands of a large complex public building and/or listed building. • Good working knowledge of statutory compliance within a medium to large, diverse, and complex estate. • Previous knowledge and experience of maintaining buildings of historic, heritage importance. • Able to demonstrate strong budgetary understanding and control. • Strong project management skills and ability to deliver to budget and deadlines. Proven track record of taking and accepting responsibility for projects and initiatives. • Ability to react quickly to situations, to be reliable and resilient, to perform consistently under pressure and to respond positively to changing circumstances. • Flexible and adaptable in thinking and approach, able to plan and manage change. • Ability to communicate both in writing and orally in a fluent and persuasive manner, in good clear English, and to listen, negotiate, and be assertive as appropriate. • People management skills to ensure direct reports and team members have the requisite skills and knowledge and are competent and supported through training and coaching to achieve consistently high standards of performance. • Fairness and consistency in team management and application of ROH and Department policies, procedures, and standards. • Flexibility to work varied hours including regular evenings and weekends. • Experience of AutoCAD or other drawing software, and proficient Microsoft Office user. • Evidence of Continual Professional Development. To get there we will sustainably purchase elec- tricity and permanently change how we heat our buildings, in line with emission Scopes 1 and 2*. We will also work with our suppliers to help them reduce their emissions and set Scope 3 emission targets by 2025.
