Foundations 9 7 0 Changing the World Tell UsHowSmartDevices are
In a world where most busy folks rely on a virtual office at least in part, smartphones have become a necessity. Many of us have one and use it every hour of every day, whether it’s to schedule an appointment, send a message, navigate around town, or take photos. While our devices may help us be more productive and available to others at any hour of the day, we’re often behind the wheel when that all-important email or text arrives. We hear that distinct ding or chime and, acting on instinct, look down to see who’s messaging us. It’s so easy to take a quick glance at the message while driving without giving it a second thought — but what is the true cost of a quick glance? The number of emails and texts we receive on a daily basis is quite shocking. An average office worker receives 121 emails every day, according to a 2015 study analyzing email statistics. Text messages average somewhere in the neighborhood of 16–128 per day, depending on your age. Either way, for the average person, there is no shortage of messages to demand our attention. What is more shocking, however, is that most texts receive a response within 90 seconds. No doubt many of these text messages are read and responded to while driving. The ramifications of a car crash caused by texting are manifold. Countless innocent lives have been lost due to a moment’s distraction. Fathers, mothers, siblings, and children have all passed away as a result of people who chose to text and drive.
The at-fault driver who kills or severely injures someone due to their impulse to check their phone now faces lengthy criminal and civil litigation. It’s a process that could end in conviction and bankruptcy, not to mention living with the guilt of committing a senseless act. At VanMeveren Law Group, we are committed to ongoing efforts to promote the importance of safe driving, wearing seatbelts at all times, and never texting while driving. Along these lines, we’re pleased to announce a brand-new scholarship campaign: Heads Up/Phones Down.
the Heads Up/Phones Down button near the top of the page. If you are an eligible applicant (see scholarship criteria for details), we invite you to fill out the form. We look forward to reading the responses! When driving, we must give our full attention to the task at hand: driving. Let’s resist the urge to send or respond to that text or email. Silence your phone. Keep it out of sight and out of mind until you reach your destination. Heads Up/Phones Down!
