AICC Annual Meeting A Success In Chicago
More than 700 AICC members and guests convened in the "not so windy city" of Chi- cago for the Association’s 2025 Annual Meeting, which was held at Sheraton Grand Riverwalk Hotel from Monday, October 6-8. Outgoing Chairman Gray Brewer guided the discussion, citing his passion for piloting and his theme of "Flying the Plane.” Kept the pro- gram on course about what is happening for AICC members and with the corrugated in- dustry as a whole. Throughout the day, members heard from association leaders and panel discussions, and celebrated the next generation of indus- try talent. From new initiatives that build stron- ger business ties to updates on the Emerging Leaders program and the Student Packaging Design Competition, the message was clear: the independent community is continuing to grow and evolve, together. New Opportunities For Canadian Members AICC Canada President George Perreira announced plans for an upcoming event de- signed to connect Canadian customers and suppliers through meaningful business en- gagement. Scheduled for February 2027 in
Your market is shifting, your competitor just pulled ahead, and the one person who could execute the next move has resigned. You can’t get more data fast enough, yet the window to act is closing. In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world, this is the moment that defines leadership, and indecision is the most dangerous move you can make.

It’s like waiting for a major software update to finish: you’ve been watching the progress bar for an hour, now stuck at 87 percent. Do you wait, restart? How do you know? And it doesn’t help when the col- league next to you says theirs was done in 15 minutes. Now replace that update with a business-critical choice: You’re half- way through expanding production into a new product line, deposits paid and suppliers waiting. Tariffs might be coming,….or not. The op- erations lead you thought you’d secured hasn’t signed yet. Two main competitors might merge if that legislative bill passes, or might not. Do you move now? Hit pause? Scale back? Consolidate? Or wait, and see? This is where most companies slip into decision deadlock, sitting still while everything else moves. And in volatile markets, that standstill is rarely neutral; it’s a slow slide backwards. CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

Smurfit Westrock To Invest $19.3M In Mississippi Container Plant Smurfit Westrock has announced its plan to invest nearly $19.3M to expand its corrugated packaging manufacturing site in Saltillo, Mississippi. The Dublin-based packaging ecompany, with North American headquarters in Atlanta, is adding new convert- ing equipment to increase efficiency and allow the pro- duction of larger-format packaging. The project is expected to be completed by October 2026. Upon completion, the upgrade is expected to im- prove the facility’s output by about 50 percent. “The decision by the Smurfit Westrock team to expand in Saltillo reinforces what so many already know—Missis- sippi is a manufacturing powerhouse,” Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves says. “As long as companies like Smurfit We- strock continue to rely on Mississippi to get the job done right, we will continue showing the world what we can do.” “Smurfit Westrock is committed to optimizing the perfor- mance and value of its manufacturing operations,” Smurfit Westrock North America President and CEO Laurent Selli- er says. “The expansion of the Saltillo facility demonstrates our ongoing collaboration with development partners in Mississippi, increases capacity and growth within our sys- tem and supports the communities where we live and work.”

Declining Demand For Cardboard Signals Warning For US Growth According to an article in Packaging Gateway , reduced demand for cardboard packaging is ringing alarm bells across the United States. Far more than just a shipping material, corrugated cardboard is a barometer of consum- er activity and industrial health. When fewer boxes are being made and shipped, it usu- ally signals that households are spending less, businesses are pulling back, and economic momentum is slowing. Cardboard Boxes As An Economic Indicator Cardboard boxes may seem ordinary, but they move almost everything in the modern economy. Economists sometimes refer to corrugated packaging demand as the “cardboard box index” because it provides an early glimpse into the state of trade, manufacturing and retail. Recent figures show shipments of corrugated boxes in the US have fallen to their lowest level in years. This drop matters because consumer spending drives around two- thirds of the American economy. If businesses are ordering fewer boxes, it suggests fewer goods are being produced, transported and bought. Historically, declines in cardboard demand have preceded wider economic slowdowns. Declining Demand (CONT’D FROM PAGE 12)
Causes Behind The Slump In Corrugated Demand Several forces are combining to reduce cardboard usage across the US: • Post-pandemic adjustment: Online shopping surged during lockdowns, sending box demand to record highs. With consumers now spending less on deliv- ered goods and more on services, packaging orders are normalising at lower levels. • Trade pressures and costs: Tariffs and shifting trade policies have made raw materials like wood pulp more expensive. Box producers are struggling to keep mar- gins, prompting some to scale back operations. • Efficiency in packaging: Retailers and e-commerce giants are experimenting with lighter mailers, small- er boxes and reusable packaging. These innovations save costs but reduce the need for traditional corru- gated cartons. • Cooling industries: Construction, automotive and du- rable goods sectors—heavy users of packaging—are slowing. Weaker investment in these industries trick- les down to fewer shipping orders. Why It Matters For The Wider Economy Falling demand for packaging does not stop at box manufacturers; it ripples across multiple industries and signals risks for national growth: • Early sign of recession: Because nearly every product requires packaging at some point, fewer boxes often precede a drop in gross domestic product (GDP) and employment. • Impact on jobs: Paper mills, packaging plants and tim- ber suppliers are feeling the pinch. Several pulp mills in North America have already closed or reduced ca- pacity, putting thousands of jobs at risk. • Supply chain stress: Lower demand may keep box prices from soaring, but rising input costs—energy, pulp and transport—still squeeze producers. This im- balance can lead to plant closures and supply short- ages if conditions worsen. • Corporate caution: Lower packaging orders mean firms are holding off on production, delaying expan- sions, or cutting investment. That can ripple through financial markets and dent economic confidence. What Lies Ahead For The US Economy The trajectory of cardboard packaging demand will be closely watched in the months ahead. If consum- er spending continues to weaken under the pressure of high borrowing costs and inflation, corrugated ship- ments may keep sliding. Conversely, a rebound in retail or e-commerce could stabilise demand. For now, the cardboard-box slump serves as a quiet but telling warning sign. It reminds policymakers, busi- nesses and consumers that the health of something as simple as packaging can reveal much about the broader direction of the US economy. The numbers tell us this isn’t a rare problem: • A major 2025 McKinsey + World Economic Forum report found 84 percent of executives feel underpre- pared for the unprecedented convergence of geopolit- ical, climate, AI-driven, and supply chain uncertainties. • In a typical Fortune 500 company, decision paraly- sis costs about $250 million per year in wasted labor alone. • A 2023 global study of business leaders found 85 per- cent suffer from “decision distress” and 59 percent face a “decision dilemma” more than once every sin- gle day. The challenge will only grow as complexity, data vol- ume, and operational pace increase. Leaders need a re- set, a way to defibrillate their deadlocked decisions, fast, structured and before the window closes. When a decision flatlines in the middle of volatility, the cost of standing still can be as damaging as getting it wrong. This reset, or ‘Decision Defib’ is a simple, count- down-style approach to move from paralysis to purposeful action, even when the situation is shifting under your feet. 3 – Shock: Break The Freeze And Aim True Restart momentum and confirm you’re solving the right problem. • Spot the Flatline: Acknowledge the stall openly and declare intent to move. Then check whether you’re try- ing to make the right decision. Many teams freeze be- cause they’re wrestling with the wrong question or one that’s too big to tackle in one move. Reframe if needed. • Strip the Noise: Remove distractions, irrelevant op- tions, and the overload of data and side issues that cloud the call. Indecision loves complexity. • Call Time: Deadlines matter, but the why matters just as much. Ask: Why does this decision need to be made now? and What specifically must we decide by then? If missing information is holding you back, make a par- tial decision to keep progress alive while deferring the rest. 2 – Stabilize: Frame The Decision With Precision Clarify what’s at stake and how you’ll measure the right outcome. • (Re)Define Decision Criteria: Be explicit about what this decision must achieve and how it fits with your overall strategy. Is it about unlocking an investment, selecting the best supplier, safeguarding market share, or adjust- ing to legislation? Distinguish between must-haves and nice-to-haves so your criteria act as a compass. • Surface and Quantify the Big Unknowns: Identify the major risks or moving parts. Discuss whether they af- fect all options equally or only some. Quantify where possible and decide what must be navigated without certainty. 1 – Surge: Decide and Drive Forward Commit, communicate, and move.

• Throw the Switch: Once the noise is stripped, the un- knowns are clear, and the criteria are set, it’s time to de- cide. Commit to the path, announce it to the right stake- holders, and trigger the first visible step. Momentum is your best guard against sliding back into paralysis. Where AI Fits, And Where It Doesn’t In complex decision making, AI can be a powerful ally, but only if you give it the right role. Use it to accelerate the heavy lifting: gathering and sorting data, mapping scenar- ios, stress-testing assumptions, and surfacing alternative options you may not have considered.

Think of it as adding an extra analyst to the room, one who works at lightning speed. Don’t use AI to make the final call. It can’t account for trust, values, ethics, or team capacity, the human factors that decide whether a deci- sion will hold in the real world. AI belongs in the Shock and Stabilize steps to clarify the picture, not in the Surge step where judgment and accountability must stay human. When a decision flatlines, the silence can be decep- tive — behind it, risk builds and momentum fades. This approach works to defibrillate decision deadlock, giving leaders a structured way to restart the heartbeat of prog- ress. With the pulse restored, the task shifts to keeping that rhythm alive through each turn of uncertainty. After all, it’s the steady beat of decisive action that carries a busi- ness through the storm. Manufacturing Weakness Weighs On Hiring Decisions
Board Converting NEWS INTERNET DIRECTORY
According to the National Association of Manufacturing (NAM), persistent softness in U.S. manufacturing contin- ued to weigh on employment and production through late summer, as new data pointed to slower activity, cautious hiring, and mixed global conditions. Job openings in the manufacturing sector fell by 29,000 in August to 409,000, bringing the job openings rate down to 3.1 percent from 3.3 percent in July and 3.5 percent a year earlier. The hires rate held steady at 2.4 percent, while the separations rate edged up to 2.5 per- cent. Although layoffs and discharges rose slightly as quits declined, turnover in manufacturing remains below the broader nonfarm average, suggesting that most firms are retaining existing workers while holding off on new hires. Manufacturing activity continued to contract in Septem- ber, though at a slower pace. The Institute for Supply Man- agement’s Manufacturing PMI registered 49.1 percent, up modestly from 48.7 percent in August but still below the 50 percent threshold that signals expansion. Of the four key demand indicators, only the Backlog of Orders Index improved, rising to 46.2 percent. The New Orders, New Export Orders, and Customers’ Inventories indexes all contracted further, underscoring weaker de- mand and lingering uncertainty. Many respondents cited tariff-related costs and cautious customer spending as fac- tors dampening outlooks. Globally, factory activity was largely unchanged. The J.P. Morgan Global Manufacturing PMI inched down to 50.8 percent from 50.9 percent, remaining just above the expansion mark. Output and new orders increased for the second consecutive month, but export demand declined for the sixth month in a row. Rising inventories of finished goods may indicate that production gains are being driven more by stockpiling than by stronger underlying demand. Meanwhile, the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI paint- ed a somewhat brighter picture of U.S. activity. The index measured 52.0 in September, down slightly from 53.0 in August but still signaling growth. New orders rose for the ninth consecutive month, though at a slower pace, while tariffs continued to pressure exports—particularly to Can- ada and Mexico—and contributed to higher input and out- put costs. Still, output price inflation eased to its weakest level since January, and modest production gains helped lift inventories for a second straight month. In the broader economy, total job openings rose slight- ly to 7.2 million in August, up 19,000 from July but down 422,000 from the previous year. The national job open- ings rate held at 4.3 percent, suggesting a labor market that has cooled to pre-pandemic levels yet remains histor- ically tight. Manufacturers continue to take a cautious approach heading into year-end, balancing soft demand and higher costs with efforts to maintain stability in their workforces.
