Changing cartoons forever

When Joseph Hanna and William Barbera opened their legendary Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Inc. studio in Los Angeles, California, in 1957, they changed cartoons forever. Creating characters like Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo and Top Cat, they revolutionised Saturday morning cartoons for the next four decades. Now, their art has been expertly curated for this series of show-exclusive titles. Hand-signed by some of the biggest names in animation and film, each cel was created using specialist fine art techniques or hand-painted using the same materials as the originals, making them a truly unique gift for any cartoon fan.

Clampett, to source the most desirable Hanna- Barbera works in the industry. Ruth’s father was the legendary American animator Bob Clampett, who is famed for his work on the Looney Tunes series. She told us: “They [William Hanna and Joseph Barbera] had the most significant effect on television animation. It’s really astounding how many different shows they did – it’s unprecedented. They had the foresight to see that with movie theatre cartoons, television was coming up and that’s where it was going to go. “I grew up watching The Flintstones and The Jetsons , and I loved those shows. This amazing collection of Hanna-Barbera art will never be created the same way again.”

DID YOU KNOW? Animators used a planned animation process, whereby frames were repeated to lower the number needed and speed up production. Because of this, the studio could focus more on scriptwriting, situational comedy and creative camerawork. It also led to many characters being drawn with collars and neckties so the heads could be seamlessly separated onto a separate cel. As a result, Huckleberry Hound’s red bowtie, Scooby-Doo’s dog collar and Yogi Bear’s signature green tie are not just fashion accessories but a shrewd animation technique!
