JATUPO The jaguar is a magnificent and mysterious cat, feared and revered in equal measure. The title of this piece is Robert’s play on the name of the Jatapu River in the central Amazon. A habitat of the elusive jaguar, it has thankfully been a protected conservation area since 2002.

RUFIJI On choosing to name this work after a river in Tanzania, Robert says: “Rivers are the lifeblood of the earth, carrying water and food. Often found near rivers, big cats are at the top of the food chain and are crucial for the regulation of animal populations and the preservation of plant life and the ecosystem.”

CALATHEA

Finding a new love for plants during lockdown, Robert was particularly enraptured by the Calathea. It is sometimes known as the prayer plant, thanks to the unique phenomenon that sees its leaves close inwardly at night, resembling hands coming together in prayer. Robert says: “I chose this title for my tiger as the Calathea, to me, symbolises a prayer in the night, hope and rebirth.”
