18. Matchless Love. “The life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” (Gal. 2:20). There was Bethlehem, with the manger; there was Nazareth, with the carpenter’s shop; and there was the wilderness, with the devil’s temptation. There was the lonely pathway; and there was Gethsemane; there was the judgment hall; and there were the purple robe and the crown of thorns. And there was the sad road outside the city; and there were the nails, and the cross, and the darkness, and the death. All that was included in Paul’s thought when he said: “Who loved me, and gave himself for me.”—W. H. Aldis. 19. True Loveliness “Yea, he is altogether lovely” (Cant. 5:16). There is in the Lord Jesus a perfect evenness of various perfections. All the elements of perfect character are in lovely balance. His gentleness is never weak. His courage is never harsh. Fol low Him through all the scenes of out rage and insult . . . How His inherent greatness comes out! Not once does He lose His high dignity.—C. I. Scofield. 20. Our Surety “Because I live, ye shall live also” (John 14:19). Many men talked about a western continent, but Columbus went there and came back again, and that ended doubt. Many men before, and apart from Jesus, have cherished thoughts of an immortal life beyond the grave, but He has been there and returned. And that,- and, as I believe, that only, puts the doctrine of immortality upon an ir- rifragable foundation. . . The one light of certitude in the great darkness is the fact that Jesus Christ hath died, and is risen again.—Alexander Maclaren. 21. A Prayer for Love “And hope maketh not ashamed; be cause. the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us” (Rom. 5:5). O God, we are filled with shame at the thought that we so little know Thy love, and so little desire to know it! Thou hast given us the highest proof . . . in the love of Christ our Lord on the cross . . . O God, we beseech Thee, pour out Thy Spirit upon Thy church, and the power, of Thy love into our hearts, through the Holy Spirit. —Andrew Murray.
Living for Christ, my members I yield, Servants to God, for evermore sealed, “Not under law,” I’m now “under grace,’* Sin is dethroned, and, Christ takes its place. —T. Ryder. Unconscious Growth “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow” (Matt. 6:28). Mrs. H. W. Smith never said a sweeter thing than when she answered the ques tion, "How do the lilies grow?” by simply saying, “They grow without try ing.” Our sweetest spiritual life is the life . of self-unconsciousness through which we become united to Christ, and live continually on His life, nourished, fed, and constantly filled with His Spirit and presence and all the fullness of His imparted life.—A. B. Simpson. 15. A Crown “And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head” (John 19:2). Unique coronation! Yet how fitting! for it needed the Son of God to wear such a crown of thorns, because He and He only could transform thorns into a crown. And just that unique miracle is possible to , . . the humblest believers in daily life. For this is indeed "the victory that overcometh the world” . . . the victory, that is, of “our faith,” as it draws upon the resources of God and changes thorns into a crown. —Northcote Deck. 16. The Divine Masterpiece “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory” (2 Cor. 3:18). Steadily is the great Artist working day by day, persistently, unerringly con forming us “to the image of his Son.” But though we know the Artist—“it is God which worketh in you”—and know the theme—“we shall be like him”— yet the picture is veiled;, "it doth not yet appear what we shall be.” And so the whole creation is waiting, waiting, waiting for the manifestation of the divine Artist’s masterpiece . . . the pic ture of the unveiled sons of God—men and women—like unto the glorified Jesus Christ!—James H. McConkey. 17 . Abide in Me “As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me” (John 15:4). • One day in a Japanese garden a friend said to me, “Do you know how these trees are kept small ?’ ’ I answered, “No. How?” She replied, “The tap root is cut.” I thought: How much like those trees we Christians become when we allow something to sever the connection between ourselves and the source of our spiijitual life, our precious Lord! ¡—Ruth Agnew. 14.
