stubborn self-sufficiency and bis per verse notion that salvation' is some thing that he must “buy” with the efforts of his -own hands, the Lord here very graciously (and perhaps with a bit of irony) accommodates His speech to our perverseness. But He does it only that He may teach us the futility of our notions. You are determined to buy salvation? Very well, the Lord says, I will sell it to you; but only if you come “without money and without price” ! “Without money” describes the sinner’s condition. “Without price” describes the divine salvation. This is the great para dox of God. If you want to “buy” His salvation, you must come singing, “In my hand no price I bring.” The price of salvation is “no price.” To the self- righteous Pharisee, this is a staggering “price” to pay. 1 3. “My thoughts a r e n o t y o u r thoughts” (v. 8). It is easy to miss the connection between these words and what has gone before in the chapter. We should recall that up to this point we have been reading of salvation by pure grace “without money and without price.’’ And if in our conceit of human reasoning we should begin to say that this way of saving men is- unreasonable and illogical, we are to remember that God’s thoughts and ways are not ours. We cannot judge the doings of the Almighty God with’ our puny little in tellects. An infidel lay upon his death-bed. At the foot of his bed was a board with the words written in chalk, “God is nowhere.” The man’s little daughter came in. He asked her to read it. She spelled out the words, and read them, "God is now here.” His eyes filled with tears. God had spoken to his heart and conscience. He felt himself a lost sinner in the presence of God. But he found Him to be a Saviour God.—1,000 Tales Worth Telling, by Pickering.
