them” (v. 14). Although the prophet trusted in the knowledge of God, the divine permission of this coming evil still remained an insoluble enigma. Just as men took thè fish Of the sea by the hook and the net with no ruler to pro tect them, so it ' seemed to Habakkuk that the Chaldeans would conclude the Israelites had no God who could pro tect them. If God g:ave Israel over into their hands without exerting His pro tective power, would not the Chaldeans argue that their own power was greater than that of Jehovah? Might they not therefore actually “sacrifice unto their net” (v. 16) instead of giving glory to God? Thus, the prophet’s deepest con cern was not over any personal doubts, hut rather a jealousy for the glory of Jehovah in the eyes of men. A minister said to an evangelist who was holding services in his church, “I have no faith in this matter, but I see it in the Word of God, and I am going to act on God’s Word, no matter how I feel.” And the evangelist replied, “Why that is faith!” The Word of God is the se cret of faith, —Sunday School Times. MEMORY VERSE: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” (Psa. 56:3). APPROACH: Last Sunday, our les son was from the prophet Isaiah, /and today we are to learn from another of the Lord’s true ministers, whose name was H a b a k k u k , a man who “was afraid” (Hab. 3:2), Why should he fear? he began right away to praise God. He said, “The Lord God is my strength” (v. 19)—no matter what happens. Hife faith grew and grew. Why, he said, even if there is no harvest at all, and all the flocks and herds should die, “yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation” (v. 18). Habakkuk learned that faith and re joicing will chase away fear. We need to learn that lesson, too.

Object Lesson T he D oor w it h M any L ocks OBJECTS: A cardboard box with an imitation prison door, a chajn, four padlocks, and a cardboard heart. (Cut the lid of the box to represent bars. Color one side of the heart black and the other white.) LESSON: Here is a strange looking prison, a strange looking prisoner, arid a strangely locked door. The heart is in prison, because it is a black heart of sin, and the prison door is fastened with a chain on which there are five pad locks. The first padlock is marked' “ swear ing.” We will take the key and open it. But the door is still securely locked! Men are not saved just because they stop the foolish and sinful habit of swearing. The next lock is marked “stealing.” When men are convicted of sin, they often realize that they are thieves. They immediately think they may be saved by quitting their stealing. We will open this jock. The prison door is still fastened. “Whisky” is the mark on the third lock. It is a great sin to drink whisky, but let us not think that q u i t t i n g whisky will save a person. We will un fasten this lock, only to find the door securely fastened. The last is the lock of “unbelief.” When the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas what he must do to be saved, they said to him, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Paul knew that the only way' to be saved was to have faith in Christ as the One who died on the cross for the sins of the world. The opposite of unbelief is faith. Ha bakkuk tells us that “the just shall live by his faith.” First we are saved by faith, and then we also live by faith. Look at the freed heart—it is now white. Division The Lord showed Habakkuk a pre cious lesson—that the heavenly Father has a perfect plan in ,which each child of God has a part. Though sometimes we have to wait a long while before we can realize how perfect the plan is, yet all the time—no matter how much suffering and trouble may be going on —all things are working together for good to the ones who love God (cf. Rom. 8:28). When Habakkuk realized that,
