way, and had transferred their worship i to Baal. But, had the prophets been speaking from the Lord, the people in following them would have been turned j from their evil doings unto Jehovah. ! There are “prophets” of this kind today, even within the professing church, who claim to speak representing God, yet they turn from His Word and cause others to ignore or forsake it. Where- ever there is a suggestion that the Bible is not the Word of God, and that it does not contain sufficient guidance for life and conduct, that insinuation comes from a “false prophet.” n . T h e ir R e c o g n it io n (23-29) The God of heavep and earth recog nized these pseudo-prophets for what they were. Their evil- ways and words were ever before Him. By the same token, we need not be unduly disturbed by present-day false prophets; they do nothing and say nothing with which God is not familiar, and in His own good tUne He will bring all false prophesying to an end. The evil of the false prophets was that they claimed to have dreamed dreams, and declared that these dreams were the truth of God. But the dreams, as the results proved, arose in the evil hearts of the false prophets, and in turn, the prophets, being deceived fey their own thoughts, deceived the peo ple. The human heart is deceitful above all things (cf. Jer. 17:9), and that which comes from it is deceit, however appealing it may be to human reason. We must be on guard constantly lest we, too, be deceived by our own hearts (cf. 2 Pet. 2:1-3; 2 Tim. 3:13). However much like the truth the false prophets may speak, they inva riably cause the people to forget even the name of their God. There is a growing need today for God’s people to examine carefully all that purports to be God’s truth and to turn resolutely away from everything that, in the slightest degree, is contrary to the plain Word of God. Jeremiah 23*21 I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. , g 22 But if they had stood in my coun sel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings. . 23 Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off! 24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the. Lord. ; 25 I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, say ing, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. 26 How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; - 27 Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams, which they’ tell every man to his neighbor, as their fathers have forgotten my name for 28 The prophet that had a dream, let him tell a dreams and he th»t hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. , . 29 Is not my word like as a Ilrer saith the l.ord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock In pieces? 30 Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that steal my words every one from his neighbor. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that use their tongnes, and say, He saith, 32 Behold, I am against therii that prophesy false dreams, saith the Lord, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their light ness; yet I sent them not, nor com manded them; therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the Lord.
