hot beneath. He does not come out of the pit with the drippings of iniquity, but from the principalities of heavenly provinces, for he is at this moment the monarch of majesty, the prince of power, the emperor of the ether. . The devil inhabits neither hell nor man, but he has access to our sensibil ities, and he can dominate us by spirit ually wicked influences. ■ In his manifestation' to man, Satan comes in three principal types: . Satan comes as a serpent. He beguiles and fascinates. Satan comes as aft angel of light. He is an evangelist of half truths. Satan comes as a roaring lion. He is a brutal antagonist. Here is a foe to fear. How can he be conquered? There are no physical weap ons to take his measure. There are no psychic weapftns. There is but one weapon—faith: “Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world” (v. 9), And the reason that faith is superior to the weapons that a re,psychical and physical is that faith brings Christ into the conflict, and to Christ Satan is a defeated foe. Three things are said concerning such afflictions as come upon us from a Sa tanic source: They are universal (v. 9). They are not personal and peculiar to ourselves— ' "knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.” There are many others in other parts of the world who are passing through the same experiences we, must endure. They are temporary (v. 10). The suf fering is for "a while.” They are perfecting (v. 10). The ob ject is to “make you perfect.” , The final word of the main discus sion is an ascription of praise to Christ: “To him be glory and .dominion for ever and ever.” And in the,position we have in Him, we are not isolated to one world of suffering, pain, and death, for in his benediction Peter spans the spaces of time and distance and plants our pilgrim feet upon the golden pavement of the Eternal City where the song of the immortal com pany will be an ascription of praise similar to the song we love on earth: “All hall the power of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostrate fall;
YOUR CARES AND GOD’ S CARE [ Continued from Page 126] “tie about you the slave’s apron.” How different our Christian relations -would . be if we came together with this gar ment, and our attitude was always, •"Brother, what may I do for you?” A woman who could not quite forget the doctrinal differences that separated Wesley and Whitefield said to Mr. Wes ley soon after he had preached White- field’s funeral sermon: “Mr. Wesley, do you expect to see Mr. Whitefield in heaven?” After a lortg pause, Wesley1 said solemnly, “No, Madam.” “ Oh,” exclaimed his questioner, - “1 was afraid you would say so.” “But," Wesley added1 with intense earnestness, “do not misunderstand me, Madam. George Whitefield will stand so near the throne that one like me will never get a glimpse, of him!” What an example of true humility! Those whom God has used .most power fully have been men who were humble before Him. 2. Our Attitude T o w a r d God— TRtJST (v.7). This trust of God is not simply a passive attitude of mind—it is an act of volitional faith. You do something about it. You “cast” your cares upon His care. But doYiot merely throw your cares away nor try to throw them off as some think to do. This passage does not teach the philosophy of indifference ,or ex tinction. We are to throw our cares neither off nor away but on. It is the place you put your cares that makes the difference. Put them- in His care— “casting all your cafe upon him.” What cares are we to cast on Him? The cares of health. The cares of home. The cares of our children. The cares of finances. The cares of life work. “All . . . care” ! ID. S p i r i t u a l Adversaries (vs. 8 - 11 ). This First Epistle of Peter alludes to three foes, common enemies of all Christians: 1. The F o e A r o u n d Us THE WORLD (1:14). Every sense of the five we possess becomes a potential source of defeat the moment we contact the world. The world with all its alluring enticements is a foe we may well fear. 2. The Foe Within Us—THE FLESH (4:2-11). A man’s greatest enemy is himself— the self that is not controlled by the mastership of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let him follow that self, and he follows it to tragedy. 3. The Foe Above Us—THE DEVIL (5:8). Remember the spiritual locality of this adversary. He is from above and
