NOTES on Christian Endeavor By MILDRED M. COOK

East India Company . . , As the only resort, he took passage in à vessel for Burma . . . Thus did the opposition of man but work out God’s higher pur pose, as subsequent events proved. “Judson was forbidden by the Spirit to enter India, because God would have him in Burma. There, among its wild tribes, was a people prepared for the Lord. The Karens had for centuries nourished the tradition of white teach ers to appear among them, bringing the Book of God. When such a teacher came, they gave ready ear to his mes sage.”—Robert Hall Glover, in The Pro gress of WorldrWide Missions. Questions for Discussion 1. Should a Christian engage in any kind of business , which ' he cannot un reservedly ask the Lord to bless? 2. How is it possible to glorify God in a purely secular business?' (Acts 16:14, 15; 1 Cor. 10:31; Col. 3:17). 3. What two outstanding examples can be cited to prove the dignity of manual labor ? (Our Lord who worked as a 'carpenter—Mark 6:3; and Paul who was a tentmaker—Acts 18:3; 1 Corinthians ■4:12). MAY 12,- 1940 PARENTS ARE PEOPLE, TOO ! E x o d u s 20:12; 1 J o h n . 2:12-14

MAY 5, 1940 VOCATIONAL DETOURS A cts 16:6-10 Meditation on the Lesson

When one’s life plans have been frus trated, can happiness and greater use fulness ever be the result ? This is a perennial question. A discussion which will point out the benefits which “voca tional detours” may bring when the life is yielded to the Lord Jesus fhrist will be a highly profitable hour. There are many interesting Scripture characters who have experienced “vo cational detours.” For instance, when Joseph, who might have dwelt quietly’ in his home country, became the object of his brothers’ jealous hatred, God used the circumstance to lead to Joseph’s becoming .“a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt” (cf. Geh. 45:8). When Ezekiel, a priest of the Lord, was forced into captivity; “the word of the Lord came expressly” to him in remarkable visions (cf. Ezek. 1:1-3). When .Philip, an evangelist in Samaria, was called suddenly to the loneliness- of the desert, the Lord used, the inci dent to extend the gospel to a whole needy race (cf. Acts 8:5, 6, 26-40). Other instances may easily be found of individuals whose unpremeditated change of vocation resulted in spiritual good. But it is significant to note that the Scripture assigned for today’s study deals not so much with the work qf the characters named, Paul and Barna bas, as with the word of the Holy Spirit in directing their lives. In other words, it is not the missionaries who qre prom inent in the passage, but the mission aries’ Guide. And for confused young people today who are concerned about their vocations, there is no more sta bilizing truth than this: The Holy Spirit is a Person, a present, wise, and pow erful Friend to every one who receives Jesus Christ* as Saviour. This truth is wholly unexplored by many today. The disciples mentioned in Acts 16: 6-10, like all other believers in the Lord . Jesus Christ,» were indwelt by the Holy Spirit (cf. Rom. 5:5). That indwelling One enabled them to be: 1. Responsive to divine direction, even when it was contrary to human desire (vs. 6,7). 2. Alert to the cry for help (v. 9). 8. Prompt to obey (v. 10), 4. Able to discriminate (v. 10). 5. Possessed of a passion to “preach the gospel” (v. 10).
