THE BEST BURGERS IN TOWN ARE ... My 2 Favorite Burger Joints

I may start a few debates with this cover article, but I believe there are two burger joints in the Detroit area that tie for the best — and they are nothing like each other.

— onions, ketchup, and mustard. And that’s it. But it works together so well. I can’t even explain what makes this juicy, simple burger so good other than to say you have to try it for yourself. Be sure to get a side of fries or onion rings, too!

Now, my family and I love to grill. We don’t stop grilling all year round. The trick to winter grilling is to keep the grill as close to the door as possible without getting it too close to your house. That way, it’s a quick in and out! Burgers and chicken are a common dish in our family, and my wife makes this amazing potato salad that goes great with our burgers. But when we’re craving some of the best burgers in town — and ones we don’t have to make ourselves — we make sure to stop at one of these places.

The other best place in town for a burger is the Redcoat Tavern in Royal Oak. While it’s a bar like Miller’s, Redcoat serves far different patties than Miller’s. Just as it sounds like it would be, Redcoat is styled like you’ve been transported

back 275 years to the American Revolution. Along with their dim

lighting and old tables, you can enjoy a huge menu and choose from many, many different toppings.

The first is an old favorite. Miller’s Bar in Dearborn opened in 1941, and to this day, it keeps the nostalgia

My personal favorite is the Original Redcoat Special Hamburger. It’s a little simple with lettuce, onion, and tomato stacked on top of “freshly ground proprietary blend beef,” but it’s topped with special sauce and a sesame seed bun. I cannot get enough of that special sauce! It really does make the burger. We’re pretty lucky to have two great restaurants serving up some amazing burgers, and I’m getting hungry just writing this. But before I finish, I’m curious: Did I get it right? Or do you have a better burger in mind? Let me know! I just might have to try out your favorites.

alive. This cash-only bar serves food on waxed paper (no plates), and jars of pickles sit on every table. As kids, my parents were both notorious for eating as many pickles as they could while they waited for their food and shamelessly embarrassed their parents. Ironically, they didn’t even know each other back then! Carrying on the local tradition, my parents took me to Miller’s as a kid, and when we were dating, I took my wife when I learned she hadn’t been there. She’s not a big beef eater, but she did say she enjoyed the burger!

But what makes Miller’s Bar one of the best burger spots in town is the simplicity. Each burger comes with cheese — Velveeta or Swiss

PARTY FOUL Trust the Experts to Remove Barbecue Stains

Save the Environment – With 5 Organization Hacks

You may want to throw away your bread tags, old rakes, and shower curtain rings, but what if you can reuse them for a more sustainable, organized lifestyle? You’ll never lose your remote control or confuse your power cords again, and it won’t even cost you anything extra. No. 1: Use shower curtain rings to hang clothing items. Tank tops and delicates (like scarves) tend to scrunch and pile up in the corner of your closet or drawers. But if you’re replacing your curtain rings anytime soon, don’t toss your old ones — you can attach them to hangers and hang ties, belts, hats, and many other accessories! No. 2: Organize power cords with old bread tags. Have a chaotic power strip that’s impossible to navigate or reorganize on the fly? Luckily, you already have labels that’ll easily attach to any cord you have: bread tags. One side of your bread tag may list the “best by” date for your bread. The other side is blank! That’s where you can take a permanent marker, write down the name of the cord, and attach it to the cord near the power strip. No. 3: Repurpose old drawers to be under-the-bed storage. Most people will throw out their old wardrobes, but if you have leftover drawers, you don’t have to get rid of them. Refinishing them is optional — they make great storage containers as-is for under your bed! Store toys, board games, and more beneath your bed, sofa, or anywhere else that has a narrow opening. No. 4: Convert an old wine rack into towel storage. It can be a tough task to stow your towels in a fashionable way. But as you begin to upgrade your home decor, you may find an extra wine rack on your hands, which happens to be perfect for storing rolled towels! No. 5: Use a hollowed book for remote control storage. Have a thick book that you’re about to get rid of? It might feel sacrilegious to repurpose a book, but it’s also one of the coolest ways to celebrate literature in a stylish, practical way. Hollow out a book and use it to store many things, including remote controls.

As vaccination rollouts accelerate and the spread of COVID-19 slows down, we’re all just itching to get back to summer parties, vacations, and fun! With that comes the long-cherished summer barbecue. After all, May isn’t just National Hamburger Month; it’s the unofficial start to grilling season for Michiganders! (Although, if you’re anything like my family, grilling season is year-round.) But stains have a way of ruining all the fun. When mustard squirts out of the hot dog bun and down the front of your favorite polo, or splashback from the wine bottle hits Grandma’s silk shirt, stains are almost inevitable. So, when they make their way to your clothing, keep this guide in mind!

DON’T SCRUB IT!

Rubbing a stain will only make the situation worse. This is the easiest way to push a stain into a piece of clothing — or any material for that matter — and ruin it. Take silk for example. When you rub it in an attempt to remove a stain, you're actually lifting the color from the fabric, too. Silk materials are only dyed at the top layer. Unlike cotton, which is dyed all the way through, silk will lose its color faster.

If you do attempt to battle a stain, remember to blot, not rub, and use cool water.

TRUST THE PROS INSTEAD

The best way to protect your garments from further damage due to a pesky barbecue party stain is to take it to a professional dry cleaner. In particular, any stains that involve barbecue sauce and mustard are going to require professional knowledge and care. In our experience, these are the most difficult to remove. Janet Davis Cleaners has been removing all kinds of stains from clothing, bedding, rugs, and other materials for more than five generations. We have the tools and know-how to safely remove a stain from a silk shirt or your nice slacks without discoloration or damage. If you or a fellow partygoer has a barbecue mishap this summer, don’t panic! The favorite shirt isn’t ruined. Instead, trust our team to remove that pesky stain without further damage.

We hope these tips will inspire you to reduce and reuse! See you next month!

MEET WESTON! The Newest Addition to the Matthews Family

PUPPY STAINS? I’VE GOT YOU COVERED!

My wife and I love dogs. The minute we got married, we adopted our first dog. Our pug of 13 years, Bella, passed away in 2020. We picked out a new furry friend to join our family, but we wanted a dog that was completely different from pups we have had in the past.

Of course, like any puppy, Weston has had a few accidents in the house. But there are a few perks to being a fifth-generation dry-clean business owner! Here’s my tried-and-true method for removing Weston’s accidents from the carpet:

And that’s how we met Weston!

Now nearly a year old, Weston is more than 90 pounds of pure love. He’s a Bernese mountain dog, and we fell in love with him from the moment a 25-pound fluffball came bounding for us at the farm where we adopted him. When we first met him, my wife and I just wanted to meet Weston to determine if he was the right dog for our family. One look at him, and we knew: Weston was ours!

1. Use a shop vacuum cleaner and suck up the poop or carefully pick straight up.

2. Mix a little ammonia and dish soap with water and blot the area where the accident occurred.

He is considered a giant breed (he was 25 pounds when we adopted him at 3 months old)! He’s the best playmate our kids could ask for, and anytime he knocks them over, it’s because he forgets how big he is. Weston is a talker and is also the most loyal, receptive dog. He’s so smart and loves when we give him praise. We are so lucky to have Weston! He is all heart!

3. Finally, suck up any remaining the debris with the shop vac. Repeat step 2 if needed. If your pup has an accident on your rug, our team of experts can take care of it for you, too! Just give us a call to learn more.

Shaved Asparagus Salad

INGREDIENTS

• 1 lb asparagus spears

• 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

1. With a vegetable peeler, shave each asparagus spear from tip to base. This is easiest to do if the asparagus is on a flat surface. 2. Place shaved asparagus in a bowl and blot off excess moisture with a paper towel.

3. In a separate bowl, make a

vinaigrette by whisking together lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and olive oil.

4. Pour vinaigrette over shaved asparagus and add Parmesan cheese, salt, red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Toss to combine. Taste and adjust seasonings.

COULDVACCINE PASSPORTS OPEN DOORS FOR TRAVEL?

Are you hoping to travel this summer? Not like how you “traveled” from your bedroom to your living room couch all this past year, but really travel — get out and see the world beyond your hometown. With the COVID-19 vaccines finally available, millions of people are becoming immune to the virus that has ravaged the global economy, especially in the areas of tourism and hospitality. Industry leaders in these sectors are understandably eager for the vaccine to bring back tourism. Some are hoping vaccine passports will play a part in jump- starting tourism around the world. Vaccine passports are a means by which someone can prove they have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and are, therefore, free to travel internationally.

Some countries are eager for the sort of verification these passports could bring, should they exist. The Seychelles, Cyprus, Romania, and other countries have all said they would welcome tourists who could prove they were vaccinated. Now, you might be sitting on the same couch you’ve sat on for the past year, thinking, “Well, I would like to travel internationally after I get vaccinated!” However, this proposal is not without concerns. Firstly, health care officials still don’t know if vaccinated people can transmit the virus. So, even if they’re vaccinated, they could still spread it to unvaccinated people around the world. Another concern is a vaccine passport’s potential to create classes of “haves” and “have nots” among travelers. Many

developing countries won’t receive the vaccine for another few

years. Should they be barred from

returning to normal? Similarly, could the vaccine passport be abused domestically, enabling private businesses to bar customers from their spaces without proof of vaccination? Finally, what form would these passports take if they were to exist? Would they be on a smartphone app? A laminated card? A verified doctor’s note? So, while the prospect of traveling far and wide this summer after getting vaccinated is exciting, it might be better to temper your expectations for now and hope for clearer guidelines in the near future.
