6. HOBBY HAVEN
to create different light patterns. It’s also important to think about how you enter and use your home as autumn approaches. In the summer, we all tend to embrace indoor/ outdoor living; doors and windows are thrown open and we walk around barefoot. But autumn is a different story. Wet and windy weather calls for more layers and footwear that require storage. If you have a utility room, could this be transformed into a “bootility”, aka boot room? You could add shelving, a coat stand, bench seating, anything to make it somewhere snug to contain muddy feet (or paws!). If you live in an open-plan apartment, many high street stores have slim hallway stands or tidies that would be equally effective.
Part of the “comfortcore” trend I mentioned earlier is all about creating a sense of nostalgia, and indulging in simpler activities such as reading, crocheting, painting, listening to music or a podcast. Find a corner in your home where you can switch off the screen, curl up and escape. This could be a “forgotten” space like a landing or hallway, or a new “zone” in an existing room. Add a cosy chair, side table, some task lighting and decor that means something to you. One of the big TikTok trends this year is “bookshelf wealth”, where homeowners add displays of curated clutter including knick-knacks, collectibles from travels and of course, books!”
