Welcome to Wedel Beef Genetics’ 26th Annual Bull & Replacement Female Sale Welcome to our 26 th annual production sale. After a few tough years of drought, we were blessed with some green grass this summer and the Wedel Red Angus herd did what they were supposed to do; bred up at a high rate, weaned heavy calves and got themselves in shape to handle the winter. We were further blessed with the best market we’ve seen in our lifetime, with weaned calves bringing over $2500, yearlings often besting $3000, and finished steers over $4000. The bulls we’ll offer on March 10 th are the result of breeding decisions made in the spring of 2024, but more than that they are the product of 11 years of testing for Feed Efficiency, 40 plus years of feedlot and carcass data collection and more than 10 generations of our cow herd being honed for maternal efficiency and environmental fit against all the droughts and harsh winters our western great plains location has to offer. I believe during these last two years, I’ve had more fun breeding Red Angus seedstock than at any time in our 40+ years as a Red Angus genetic supplier.. That results from witnessing the success our customers have enjoyed with market topping results during the big summer video sales as well as seeing the incredible set of “wet” 2-year-old daughters of our new herd
sires. The first calf daughters of Remedy and Transcendent are beautiful uddered and appear to be every bit as good as the Prime-Times and Cornerstones were two years earlier. We continue to participate in the largest structured progeny test in the Red Angus breed. There we collect not only harvest data, but reproductive data that drills deeper into heifer breed up, calving season distribution and calving interval. The results of that progeny testing show in the closeouts on the steers we, and our customers feed, the breed-up on our heifers, and the high reproductive rates and low average cow carrying costs that we enjoy on our Wallace Ranch. We’ve completed a decade of selling bulls with our good friends at Anderson Land & Cattle. Our ranch customers from the high deserts of eastern Oregon and north- ern Nevada tell us their ALC prefix bulls hold up just like the Wedel bulls, which we expect since they are developed exactly the same and the Andersons share very similar selection priorities. Anderson Land & Cattle, Inc. The cattle produced at Anderson Land & Cattle have been founded on strong maternal, growth and carcass traits since the mid 70’s. We have used many selection tools along the way to accelerate our genetic progress. Artificial Insemination, carcass data collection and embryo transfer are standard operating procedures. Good cow families produce good bulls. Our females are scrutinized heavily and must produce and prove their value. We are realizing the improvements made through years of production records. Thank you Adolfo... Adolfo Ibarra has retired after 47 years of faithful service to Frank and Susan Wedel. He started as an eighteen-year- old young man who spoke no English. He quickly learned English as well as farming tasks such as operating tractors, combines and all sorts of implements. He learned to set irrigation water from gated pipe and start contrary M & M
irrigation engines. As we transformed into the livestock sector, he became an expert at low stress handling and he could find a sick calf with the best of them, sometimes before the calf showed clinical signs of sickness. In the rare occasion that a cow needed assistance calving, he became like my own veterinarian. He always had a great attitude, a quick smile, and a hearty laugh. He became a citizen in 1989 and was so proud of that accomplish- ment. He and his wife Betty have two sons. One son has a PhD in troubled youth counseling and the other is a fire fighter, EMS instructor, and ambu- lance driver. He is greatly missed but we wish him the best in his retirement. At Wedel Beef Genetics, Rancher Profitability is Job # 1 In the fall of 2015 we introduced our goals of improving beef industry profitability through improved feed efficiency. Now, four years later, we’re making our feed intake and conversion data even more meaningful. By leveraging the complete con- temporary group data we collect on all of our bulls against hundreds of thousands of animals that have been similarly evaluat- ed by the $Profit team, we bring the power of pedigree relationships to the prediction of feed efficiency and in this year’s cata- log will present this information in a true multi-breed Feed Efficiency EPD: F:G . In addition, the relevance of Feed Efficiency data and the resultant EPD are enhanced through it’s inclusion in a multi-breed economic selection index; $Profit. How $Profit Works: $Profit assumes that the average commercial bull will sire 100 progeny over his lifetime, that 30% of the replacements will be retained and that the rest of the heifers and all of the steers will be finished and sold on a value-based grid. Even though many ranchers sell their calves at weaning - and don’t own them all the way to harvest, we have seen feedlots’ willingness to pay for calves from genetics recognized for superior post-weaning value. Example:
• Bull A has a $Profit of $8,000 • Bull B has a $Profit of $4,000
• We would expect Bull A to produce $4,000 ($40/head x 100 calves) than Bull B . $Profit = One number that predicts your bottom-line!
How F:G (Feed/Gain) Works: Predicts differences in the amount of feed a bull’s progeny will consume to produce one pound of gain. F:G Example : Bull A = 0.25 F:G EPD Bull B = -0.25 F:G EPD Progeny from Bull B would be expected to consume 1/2 pound less dry matter for each pound of gain when compared to progeny from Bull A.
What traits are included in $Profit? Nearly every trait that impacts profitability. The rela- tionship between most traits and profit is usually straight forward. Here is the list relevant traits and their impact on $Profit: Revenue Traits: • Calving Ease = More Calves • Weaning & Yearling EPD = More payweight • Fertility = more calves produced over a cow’s lifetime • Carcass Weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs. • Marbling = valued based on grid premiums • Ribeye area = value as impacts Yield Grade • % Retail Product = more yield is more meat Cost Traits: • Cow Mature Size = in general, bigger eats more • Cow intake = increased feed intake means increased costs • Feed Efficiency = cost of Gain
• Carcass Weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs. • Marbling = valued based on grid premiums
Some traits are less easily characterized. Milk for exam- ple, is a good thing until you get too much. When milk EPD moves over +25 it begins to have more of a negative effect on fertility than the positive effect it has on weaning weight.

Selection Simplified: $Profit, $Ranch & $Feeder
$Ranch: $Ranch was developed for cow calf producers who retain their own replacements and market 100% of the steer calves and cull heifers after weaning. This is a very typical production system for a majority of beef producers, so $Ranch is an excel- lent tool for producers to compare how different bulls will impact their profitability. Traits included in $Ranch = Fertility, Milk, Weaning Growth, Cow Herd Feed Intake and Mature Cow Size Multi-generational use of $Ranch will ultimately result in increased pounds of calf harvested per unit of feed/land resource. Example: • Bull A has a $Ranch of $80 • Bull B has a $Ranch of $40 • We would expect Bull A to produce $40/head greater profit than Bull B. $Feeder: $Feeder is a tool developed to compare how bulls will impact profitability in the post-weaning phase (weaning to harvest). Traits included in $Feeder = Feed Conversion, Carcass Value (Marbling & Yield Grade) and Carcass Weight Example: • Bull A has a $Feeder of $100 • Bull B has a $Feeder of $150 • We would expect Bull B to produce $50/head greater profit than Bull A during the feeding and finishing phases of the production cycle. Cow Herds Built to Last - FERTILITY EPD The Cow Fertility EPD predicts large differences in the calf crop percentage expected from a bull’s daughters! High Fertility EPD bulls will build cow herds with consistently better breed back, higher calf crop percentage weaned, less culling requirements, and reduced replacement rates. Improved calf crop percentage drives HUGE differences in profitability. The Cow Fertility EPD was incorporated into both $Ranch and $Profit in January 2023 due to it’s huge impact on Profitability.
Fertility EPD Example: • Bull A has a FERTILITY EPD of 2.0 • Bull B has a FERTILITY EPD of 1.0 • We would expect daughters of Bull A to produce 1 more calf during the first 8 years of their life when compared to daughters of Bull B

LOT 1 - Wedel BAR NONE 5437 There’s a lot of pressure being the leadoff bull at Wedel Beef Genetics, but Wedel BAR NONE 5437 handles it without breaking a sweat! He is the first son to sell from Ideal’s first calf crop. Few sire groups have been as anticipated as the Ideal calves, ever since he was the $34,000 high selling Black/Red bull at the 2023 R.A. Brown Ranch sale, which set a new breed record at that time. By weaning the Ideal sons had pushed their way to the front with a 107 average weaning weight ratio against stiff competition, better yet: they are sound, long bodied and wide- based. LOT 4 -WEDEL PRIME EXAMPLE 5247 If you’re looking for the recipe for profit in the Red Angus business, here’s a PRIME EXAMPLE . More pounds of calf, more pounds of carcass, and more PRIME premiums backed by three generations of fertility, longevity, and fleshing ability. Lot 4 is the PRIME-TIME son out of GRAND SLAM’s dam. He’s powerfully made and lit up the ultrasound machine with ratios of 115 IMF and 111 REA. Lot 4 comes from one of the most proven and prolific cow families to ever graze our native short grass pastures. His dam has a $37,000 son and a $13,000 daughter to her credit after only two sales, and has average proge- ny ratios of 103 weaning, 104 yearling, 115 IMF and 102 REA on her natural calves. Her maternal grandam, 6094 is the highest producing female in our herd with a 116 MPPA, and still going strong as a 10-year- old. Her great maternal grandam, 071Z raised 10 natural calves as an 11-year-old and had amazing progeny ratios of: 108 weaning, 109 year- ling, 108 IMF and 108 REA. His sire, Prime Time was the leadoff and $25,000 high-selling bull in our 2021 sale. His maternal-brother, Grand Slam was the $37,000 leadoff and high-sellling bull in our 2024 sale. PRIME-TIME was injured last summer and hasn’t made semen since. Currently there are less than 400 units in existance. Prime Example could inherit his sire’s future semen sales, and should generate plenty of interest on his own, given his superior genetic predictions. Don’t worry, we’ve seen them since birth, and we still haven’t made up our mind. The good news is either will move your program to the top of the hill. Both are true multi-trait specialists, combining single-digit ranks for calving ease, heavier payweights, and off-the-charts quality grade and beautiful udder quality. Not only are they maternal brothers to the $80,000 Ranchmaster, but Frank considers their maternal grandam, WFL NEBULA 165Z 235B one of the 5 best cows he’s every owned. As a 9-year-old she produced the $22,000 Wedel Blew Sky 3555 who was purchased by Schuler Red Angus and Blew Partnership.

LOT 7 - ALC TOP PRIORITY N58 If you and your bull customers sell them by the pound, study this bull. Whenever you sell your calf crop, Lot 7 will give you more product to sell. Study his percentile ranks for weaning, yearling and carcass weights. Then his elite mar- bling and REA EPDs and know each of those extra pounds will be worth more. He defies the antagonims combining the marbling and muscularity. His dam, H002 is one of our best with average progeny ratios of: 111 weaning, 115 yearling, 117 IMF and 111 REA. Because 3/4 of his pedigree traces to Black Angus sires, he’ll be an outcross to almost all of todays popular pedigrees except Genuine and Cornerstone.
