Middlesex Centre – Municipal Minute
In the summer of 2024, Middlesex Centre repainted the iconic barn at Ilderton’s Heritage Park. As part of that face-lift, Middlesex Centre engaged the community in designing a barn quilt for the side of the building. The new quilt was installed in September. Seen in rural areas across Canada, barn quilts tell a story about the people, heritage and landscape of a community through their design. The Heritage Park quilt captures the spirit of Ilderton, celebrating its natural beauty, cultural richness and enduring community bonds. Join Us for Free Public Skating Thanks to the generosity of many local businesses and community organizations, Middlesex Centre is excited to offer free public skating on weekends and special holidays throughout the fall and winter. You can find a list of sponsored public skating dates at middlesexcentre.ca/skating or watch for weekly updates on social media. Getting Ready for Winter Roads Middlesex Centre staff are getting ready for the winter weather to come and are tuning up the snowplows! No Overnight Parking – There is no overnight parking allowed on municipal roads between 2 am and 7 am from Labour Day to Victoria Day. This is particularly important as we head into the winter season to allow for snow clearing. Message from the Mayor You know winter is on its way when Daylight Savings Time ends and the days are really getting short! For many of us, the darker days and colder weather signal that we should start thinking about getting ready for seasonal celebrations, and I believe this is a great time to shop local. Plan a family day trip to investigate all that is available at our local on- farm stores and the shops located in our villages and settlement areas. Visit Middlesex, Middlesex County’s tourism website, identifies not only our local Middlesex Centre (MXC) businesses but also those located across our region (www.visitmiddlesex.ca). Your festive menus can feature fresh produce and fruits, meat, eggs, cheese, gelato, various kinds of flour, baked goods, sweets and syrup that are all grown or produced locally. You’ll also find a variety of unique clothing, craft and gift stores. If you need a Christmas tree, finding a fresh tree under which to place your presents won’t be a problem either!

Meet Miss Tilly, our beloved six- month-old Lab Cross rescue. From the moment we met her, she completely stole our hearts with her sweet brown eyes, perky ears and her one white toe! Not long after we got her home, she became one of the family.
Say hello to Blue and Ben the official greeters at “This Oak House”. These “Ragdoll” brothers have quite different personalities. Ben is eleven and has a true Ragdoll demeanour. He is patient and lovable and likes to nap.
Teach your dog a new sport like dock diving, soccer, or frisbee, or try agility and rally obedience classes to engage their mind and body through problem-solving and physical activity. Change your walking route to give your dog new experiences, smells and sights or check out apps such as Sniffspot that connect you with private dog exercising grounds. Place a bird feeder near or on the window of your cat’s favourite perch to give them something exciting to watch. Cats love climbing and perching in places off the ground. Consider adding a sturdy wall shelf roost or climbing tower to give them an outlet for that natural instinct. Spending even 10 minutes per day on brain games will keep their minds active, reduce the incidence of behavioural issues, enhance their quality of life and deepen the connection you share with them. Tilly is laser focused, fun loving, cuddly and she loves everybody and everything! She is a nature girl and enjoys spending time outside staring at birds, bugs, falling leaves and SQUIRRELS!! However, she has mastered the skill of fence climbing. She wears a bright pink collar with a name tag and our contact info. If you happen to see her out on the loose, please give us a call. Playing with Their Mind – Tips for Keeping Your Pet’s Mind Active by Dr. Christina Douthwaite, Ilderton Pet Hospital Mental stimulation is just as important for pets as physical exercise. Engaging your pet’s mind helps to reduce stress, anxiety, and boredom, which can lead to behavioural issues such as excessive barking, separation anxiety, destructive behaviours, house soiling, overgrooming, and certain types of aggression. There are many ways to keep your dog or cat’s mind engaged and enriched. Interactive puzzle toys encourage problem-solving and can include puzzle feeders, treat cubes, cat ball tracks, snuffle mats, and soundboards. You can also create your own brain games. Try hiding treats around the house for a fun game of hide-and-seek or engage your cat’s hunting instinct with “treat hockey”, where they chase a piece of moving kibble. Scattering a handful of kibble in the backyard is another great way to curb boredom for a fenced-in dog. Positive and fun training sessions that teach new commands also engage the mind. Shorter sessions are preferred to maintain focus and can include one to two new commands per month. Nine-year-old Blue, on the other hand, is very talkative and follows his human mother, Marilyn, around in the store as well as at home (next door) for lunch! He loves to play and definitely does not nap very often. Their beautiful blue eyes sparkle at the sound of the treat bag!

Remembering Our War Heroes by Carol Small, Middlesex Centre Archives
As November approaches, the veteran banners adorn main streets in towns and villages across Ontario. As we gaze at the faces on the banners or the names on the local cenotaphs, we must give them our gratitude. However, the picture and name give us no details about these local heroes. They need to be remembered for who they were. They left behind families and a community that worried and grieved. Let’s find out about some of these local heroes from Middlesex Centre Archives. In the former Lobo Township, Zavitz is a common name in the Coldstream area. One of the Zavitz sons now lies in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, in Kleve, Germany. Warrant Officer Class II Russell Clayton Zavitz, son of Clayton and Flora McCallum Zavitz, was killed in action on January 13, 1943, as his plane flew over Germany. He was just 31 years old. According to the information on the Find a Grave website, the plane, in which he was a gunner, was probably shot down by night fighter pilot Major Werner Streib, of the Stab I./NJG 1, flying Bf 110 ‘G9+BB’ from Venlo airfield, in the Netherlands. Besides his parents, Russell left behind a younger sister, Ruby, and a younger brother, Roy.

before enlisting on July 10, 1940, in the RCAF. He had attended this school as well. On May 17, 1942, the Hudson aircraft that Jack was aboard failed to return from an anti-submarine patrol over the North Sea. At the 1942 Christmas Concert at S.S. 4 London Township, his portrait was unveiled. Jack was interred at Runnymede Cemetery, in Surrey, England. These are only three of the men and women who have served our community. Some gave their lives. Some came home. All their families were affected in some way by their service. Our community is proud of them. As you pass by the cenotaph or gaze at the veteran banners, stop and think about these people and their service. Think about their families. They are heroes. Visit the Middlesex Centre Archives to learn more about the people who so bravely fought for the freedoms we have today. Cherish that freedom and their sacrifices.

Page 6 Ilderton and Area Villager • November 2024 In the former London Township, a schoolteacher joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Flying Officer John (aka Jack) R. Paisley (1915-1942) was the son of Frederick Paisley and Annie Loft, and brother of Newton and Mary Isabel, who was a nurse who served overseas during WWII. Jack taught school for three years at S.S. 4 London Township (Ilderton) In former Delaware Township, Corporal George Welch (1915- 1965), son of John and Agnes Bell Welch, was one of the first from the Delaware area to join the Canadian Active Army. During WWII, Corporal Welch served in England removing “dud” bombs with a bomb-removal squad. He helped construct a Canadian hospital that was in three sections over three-quarter acres – built to foil incoming German bombers. However, in the local paper on September 14, 1944, Corporal Welch’s wife, Muriel Margaret McGillivray Welch, reported that he was one of the fortunate Canadian soldiers who survived the Dieppe Raid, where so many Canadians lost their lives. In the Dieppe Raid, over 6000 Canadian soldiers took part, 900 died and nearly 2000 became prisoners of war. Corporal Welch did return to his wife and two daughters, his parents, and his sisters, Carrie and Maggie.

WHO WE ARE: The Poplar Hill Lions Club is continuing the annual sale of road- side trees that was started by Trees Middlesex Centre in 2011. WHAT WE ARE OFFERING: The objective is to encourage the planting of native deciduous species along the roads of Middlesex Centre. By ordering in bulk and applying for grants from Middlesex Centre to subsidize the cost, we can provide trees to residents at a significant discount. WHY WE ARE DOING IT : Trees planted along the roads over 100 years ago have provided shade, windbreaks, have been homes to wildlife, enhance the environment and add scenic appeal to the community. These trees have reached the end of their lifespan and most have been removed. New trees are now needed to replace them. HOW IT IS DONE: Trees planted along the roads over 100 years ago have provided shade, windbreaks, have been homes to wildlife, enhance the environment and add scenic appeal to the community. These trees have reached the end of their lifespan and most have been removed. New trees are now needed to replace them. HOW IT IS DONE: Trees are ordered by mid November and are distributed when they are ready in the spring. Pre Ͳ paid trees can be picked up at the Poplar Hill Park along with planting instructions. Aunts, Uncles and Cousins – Part II by John Caverhill My Grandparents, Wm. A. (Carpenter Bill) and Cecilia had six children. My Aunt Winnifred (Winnie), their oldest, was born in 1881, in a frame house that replaced the original cabin on our farm. The remaining five children were born in the new brick house completed in 1883 by my grandfather. One section of the frame house was joined to the carpenter shop and became a blacksmith shop. The other section was moved over to the barns behind the new house and became a pigpen. This gave rise to a standing family joke. If Winnie made a kid’s typical blunder, as all kids do, the standard comment was, “What can you expect? She was born in a pigpen!” Eventually, Winnie married Jack Campbell, a London school teacher, in 1917, and they had two sons, Lloyd and Glen. Before they were married, Uncle Jack (as I knew him) would ride his motorcycle from London to visit his fiancée in Lobo, and he could do the trip in less than twenty-five minutes, which meant pretty high speeds over rough unpaved roads. After they married all mention in Father’s diary of the motorcycle ceased, so one may infer that this departure coincided with the bride’s arrival. In 1946, with things returning to normal after the war, Uncle Jack bought a new motorboat. It was a mahogany-hulled beauty with tiller steering. Its larger-than-usual outboard motor gave it a fast top speed (which Uncle Jack didn’t use when Aunt Winnie was present). For several years after the war, a good stretch of the Thames River in London’s Springbank Park was a popular place for motorboats. Springbank Dam was still operative at this time.
In the later 1800s, three steamboats, Forest City, Princess Louise, and Victoria ran daily excursions from the Forks of the Thames down to Springbank Park. River depth varied from 20 feet behind the dam to less than two feet in some other stretches, which meant the steamboats had a draught of only 16 inches. Victoria had two decks, both above the water line, and on the day of the disaster had over 800 passengers, three times her safe capacity; so being top-heavy, she overturned with a loss of at least 182 lives. By the 1940s, many parts of the river were very shallow, especially in summer. There was still deep water clear of obstacles for over half a mile behind the dam, which was ideal The Victoria Day Disaster in London, Ontario, as depicted by the Toronto Litho Company on June 13, 1881.

for motorboats, and Springbank once again became popular for boat rides. On summer weekends there were often up to a dozen operators offering rides on their boats. The large dock where the Victoria and her sister ships tied up was long gone, replaced by several small floating docks that were beached when not in use. Uncle Jack always gave us a free ride. When we were settled in our seats, he would reverse away from the deck, and then swing around. Suddenly the boat would squat and accelerate with a burst of speed that made me almost become unhinged with excitement. A regular ride consisted of one circuit of about a mile, but Uncle Jack always gave us a two-circuit ride. Even though our ride was twice as long, it ended far too quickly. As we headed home, a rare treat of an ice cream cone topped off an exciting day. It was several years later when we learned of a misadventure experienced by their boys. If business was slow, Uncle Jack would go home and return in the afternoon leaving the boys to look after the occasional riders. To put in the time, they took turns on the boat, one driving and the other riding. The rides evolved into a game called “Flip”. The passenger rode up front, straddling the bow while the driver would try to “flip” the rider off by sudden swerves of the boat. Needless to say, they didn’t play Flip when their father was present. On one particular trip, Glen was driving while Lloyd was straddling the bow. They had just turned away from the dam and were heading back to the dock. A sudden jerk of the tiller, an abrupt swing of the boat, and Lloyd was enjoying a plunge into the Thames. “The best laid plans o’ mice and men/gang oft agley” sang the poet, Robbie Burns. While he would have expressed it differently, Glen would have agreed wholeheartedly
with the poet Burns. The sudden swerve didn’t dislodge Lloyd this time; instead, there was a “clunk”, the tiller jerked from Glen’s hand and the motor disappeared into the river. They were close enough to the dock for Uncle Jack to witness the whole affair. The boys rowed back to the dock, and as Glen put it, “Dad seemed a little upset.” He made several comments during which the collective intelligence was compared unfavourably with that of a block of wood. He concluded by ordering them to row back and dive for it, and not come back until they found it. Uncle Jack accompanied them to oversee operations and warn other boats to keep clear. Being strong swimmers, the boys were not at first unduly concerned with the task confronting them. Retracing the course when approaching the dock was the thing to do. It was then that they realized the real problem lay in locating the motor in the fifteen feet of murky water. It took repeated dives and traversing back and forth across the river bottom, like dogs running back and forth to locate the trail of their quarry. It was well over an hour later, after countless dives before they finally surfaced and heaved the motor into the boat. They were back on the river the following weekend, the motor dried out and running smoothly but they never again played “Flip”.
John Caverhill is the younger son of the late Ernest Caverhill and Susie Boyd of Lobo Township. John’s writings often reflect his experiences and observations of growing up on the family farm, attending the one room school, S. S. No. 7 Lobo (Bear Creek School), and Vanneck United Church. John’s sense of humour and story-telling skills are legendary. His keen observation skills have augmented his repertoire .

Artists’ Alley Katherine Davidson
by Cathy Wood
Katherine Davidson’s professional history is in health and education but creating has been a life-long interest, and in 2005, she began her exploration of the visual arts. “I studied watercolours with Hilda Markson Gray in London, and I have participated in countless workshops and courses,” she explains. “I now describe myself primarily as an eclectic watercolourist.” Katherine’s techniques and subjects are diverse. “I employ methods such as wet on dry, wet on wet, negative painting, fractured painting, or line and wash for example. My subject matter is often influenced by the nature that surrounds my rural home, interests such as sailing and travel, or the environs of a plein air site. Creating my impression of the details and colours of what I see is forever a challenge and a profound source of pleasure.” In October, Katherine and her husband celebrated having lived on their Ilderton-area farm for 45 years. “In addition to our professional careers, we raised and exhibited purebred Hereford cattle for 25 years. It’s the beloved childhood home of our two daughters, and a home away from home for our two grandchildren. Our 100+-year old barn houses my studio in a once ancient grainery.” You can see Katherine’s work on Instagram at davidson0803 and on the websites and/or Facebook pages of The London Community Artists (londoncommunityartists.ca), The Lambeth Art Association (lambethart.com) and The Gallery Painting Group (gallerypaintinggroup.com), at the Cherryhill Village Mall and at the Western Research Park at 999 Collip Circle and other local venues. In the new year, she will have a painting on display at the London Health Sciences Centre Pediatric Intensive Critical Care Unit’s Healing Through Nature Project.
