The Motherbear Arctic Expeditions

The Motherbear

We are photographer Melissa Schäfer and producer Fredrik Granath—partners in life, love, work, and adventure. We divide our time between Stockholm, Sweden, Longyearbyen on Svalbard, and wherever the Arctic leads us. For more than two decades, we have documented the Arctic with a special focus on polar bears, sea ice, and our changing climate. Much of our work has been carried out independently during the long Arctic winter, when we spend weeks or even months at a time traveling by snowmobile across the frozen wilderness of Svalbard. Since 2016, we have also welcomed guests aboard M/S Freya, sharing this extraordinary world through small, carefully crafted expeditions. Bringing new friends to the Arctic and experiencing this world of wonders together has become one of the greatest privileges of our lives. Many of our guests leave not only with unforgettable memories, but with friendships that last a lifetime. Together we share moments that stay with us forever. We invite you to see the Arctic through our eyes, and we are equally grateful to experience it through yours —with the same sense of wonder, curiosity, and excitement that first drew us north. Our expedition team brings together more than two decades of Arctic field experience, conservation storytelling, award-winning photography, bestselling books, science communication, and expedition leadership. But more than anything else, we are here because we love the Arctic—its vast landscapes, its remarkable wildlife, and the stories it has to tell.
