OUR GRADUATE PARTNERS

I’m Sally Rice, a Partner in the Transactional Real Estate team. Trainees at Michelmores have a very important role to play within the Firm and I really enjoy being part of their recruitment and development. I oversee our Trainees during their time in the Transactional Real Estate team. Whilst in the team, we ensure that we provide our Trainees with high levels of responsibility on a wide variety of matters and access to a range of quality clients, including national banks and well known building developers. I’m Ben Hogan, a Partner in the Projects team. When recruiting Trainees, our approach is to ‘recruit to retain’. We view our Trainees as the Firm’s future Associates, Senior Associates and Partners and therefore our recruitment and trainee development processes are very important to the continued success of our Firm. Michelmores provides a great opportunity for Trainees to develop their skills and knowledge, whilst working alongside renowned leaders in their field – many of whom directly supervise our Trainees through their training contract. I’m Jennifer Ridgway, a Partner in the Tax, Trusts & Succession team. I moved to Michelmores from a large city firm and chose Michelmores because I wanted to continue to do high quality work for excellent clients, but be based in the South West. Michelmores hasn’t disappointed. Our Solicitors advise a range of clients, including private and public organisations and private individuals, in all sectors across the UK and 10-15% of our work has an international element. There are opportunities at all levels, from Trainees to Partners, to get involved in this exciting and varied work. I’m Alexandra Watson, a Partner in the Corporate team. The opportunities open to our Trainees are so varied – with a total of four seats covering a diverse range of disciplines, but also the opportunity to undertake a seat at our London or Bristol offices, as well as in Exeter. Our Trainees are encouraged to get involved in every aspect of Michelmores life – from CSR initiatives and sports, to marketing, sector groups and secondments. You can learn more about these activities in our Trainee interviews and online blog.

LIFE IN THE

SOUTH WEST

Located in the South West, Exeter is consistently ranked highly in the best places to live in the UK – and for good reason. Not only is it home to many large organisations such as the Met Office and many other businesses, it also offers a great lifestyle outside of work. Exeter offers a unique mix of busy city life, whilst sweeping countryside and idyllic beaches are just a stone’s throw away.

Set around a historic harbour, Bristol is the South West’s largest urban hub. Named as England’s first ‘cycling city’, it is home to over 450 parks and green spaces and offers easy access to all of the highlights of the South West. Bristol also boasts an impressive mix of theatres, live music venues and festivals.

What do you think is unique about working at Michelmores?

others before it – ensuring that I am fortunate enough to look forward to coming to work every day.

It is a Firm that genuinely provides room for the most ambitious of solicitors to forge their way forward in their career and to develop their own sector expertise. Many firms may say that they offer this, but in practice such opportunities are very limited throughout the profession. What has been a recent highlight for you? Being instructed by two NHS Trusts regarding a highly complex whistle-blowing claim involving senior executives and allegations of nepotism. Why did you choose to qualify into employment law? The varied nature of instructions and contextual background means that every situation I face is very different to all

Tell me about something that you have become involved in whilst at Michelmores that you wouldn’t have expected On behalf of a client, reviewing highly offensive evidence of misconduct, involving a senior employee. A huge amount of evidence had to be considered, which resulted in days of work where lunch simply had to be missed! Who would be your top three dinner party guests? If living people, I’d have to say Dennis Skinner, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Rebecca Dennis… and if I’m including fictional characters, I’d say Tywin Lannister (Game of Thrones), Don Vito Corleone (The Godfather) and Claire Underwood (House of Cards).

JAMES BAKER Partner in the Employment team, Exeter

16 | MICHELMORES

What attracted you to working at Michelmores? The ability to undertake challenging and complex work for sophisticated clients, while being based outside of London and living in a beautiful location.

Tell me about something you have become involved in whilst at Michelmores that you wouldn’t have expected I think people would be surprised by the range of geographic locations of my clients – a lot of my work involves emerging markets and work in sub-Saharan Africa. At the outset of my career I did not think I would be able to live in the South West and maintain an international caseload, often for London-based clients. I have also had the opportunity to get involved with some great internal initiatives such as Mentoring@Michelmores and Women@Michelmores. The latter focuses on supporting female career progression at the Firm. What book are you reading at the moment? I am reading a ‘Voyage for Madmen’ by Peter Nichols, a gripping account of the fate of the nine men who set out in 1968 to sail around the world non-stop, single-handedly. Highly recommended even if you are not into sailing!

What is the best thing about coming to work every day?

I would describe it as the ‘Michelmores factor!’ Everyone is very friendly and supportive and we work together to make sure we succeed as a team. How does the quality of work at Michelmores compare to your previous firm? I previously worked at a large national firm where I undertook a lot of international work for high profile clients. You have similar opportunities at Michelmores – a lot of the Partners here are leaders in their field, which means you get involved in very interesting work, often with an international element.

Why did you choose Michelmores? One of the factors which drew me to Michelmores was the ambition of the Firm – Michelmores is continually growing and it is an exciting time to work here. Everyone at Michelmores is incredibly friendly and will always have time for you if you have any questions or concerns. It’s also a social place to work and very active in terms of corporate social responsibility initiatives – both aspects I was looking for when deciding who to train with. What can you remember about your assessment day? My assessment day took place in the Bristol office and lasted the whole day. It consisted of around five different exercises including an interview. No matter how much you prepare for an assessment day, they can be very stressful, but the team who conducted the day were very friendly and welcoming, and really did put everyone at ease! It started with a presentation about the Firm and an overview of the Michelmores training contract. This provided a useful insight into what the Firm could offer Trainees. The candidates also had the opportunity to have lunch with the Bristol Partners and others – a great chance to ask questions and get a real feel for the culture.

can be very different from the last, which is something I really enjoy.

My first two seats have been in the Agricultural Property Litigation team. I arrive at the office between 8am and 9am and start the day with a cup of coffee and a read through my emails. After this, the work begins! The work I get is incredibly varied.Typical tasks include drafting documents, research, preparing advice and drafting witness statements. As the Bristol Trainee, I often get asked to go on Court runs as well. My day can also involve client meetings, mediations, Court hearings and settlement meetings with other solicitors. Tell me about something you have become involved in whilst at Michelmores that you wouldn’t have expected I recently played a key role in conducting an expert determination case, which we were successful in. Another example is being involved in and helping to prepare for mediation.

What was the last piece of music you listened to? Coldplay – Miracles.

Tell me about your average day as a Trainee in Bristol There really is no average day as a Trainee! Each day

What prompted you to move from Exeter to the London office?

Kazakhstan. We are doing some really high-profile work over there and never would I have expected that I would get to visit somewhere so out of the ordinary. It’s a fascinating country and developing rapidly as both an international business centre and a tourist hot spot, so watch this space. How would you describe the training provided during your training contract? Well-rounded. During my training contract I spent six months in London in Commercial Litigation and the next 18 months in Exeter. There are plenty of seats to choose from across different practice areas, providing Trainees with a broad experience which helps when it comes to making crucial decisions about qualification. It’s not all about the law though. Michelmores also gets Trainees involved in business development from an early stage, so writing articles for the website and attending networking events are a staple of a Trainee’s life. These skills all contribute to building a versatile lawyer.

Before joining Michelmores, I lived in Cardiff for four years but I am originally from Brighton. I moved to Exeter to join Michelmores and whilst I loved the atmosphere of the Exeter office and the beauty of the SouthWest, relocating a little further east just felt right for me. I had already spent six months at the beginning of my training contract in the London office so I knew what to expect. I qualified into Commercial Litigation and I enjoy the buzz of being in the midst of it all, so working in our London office, which is right next door to the Royal Courts of Justice is perfect for me. What do you enjoy most about the London office? The location! The office is situated in New Street Square, so there are great views of St Paul’s plus plenty of shops, cafés, bars and a monthly street-food market. Last summer there were dozens of deck chairs outside the office and a giant screen showingWimbledon, which I imagine is not helpful for the productivity of the surrounding businesses! The people are great too. The whole office gets together for ‘Thirsty Thursdays’ once a month, where colleagues of all levels of seniority catch up over a beer in the board room. Tell me about something you have become involved in whilst at Michelmores that you wouldn’t have expected I recently went on my first work trip abroad – to

Why did you choose to apply for Michelmores? I applied to Michelmores because of its reputation as a top law firm, demonstrated by some really notable clients. It was also clear to me, having seen Michelmores’ new London office, that Michelmores is growing considerably, both in the UK and internationally.

invited to various events, such as drinks with Trainees, the AGM and Summer Ball. This has allowed me to keep in constant contact and meet some new faces, including my fellow Trainees. I already feel like a member of the team! What are you most looking forward to about joining? I am very excited about the high level of client interaction and responsibility I will be given as a Trainee at Michelmores, something which has been emphasised by current Trainees I have met. I am also keen to undertake a seat in Michelmores’ London office, an amazing opportunity to experience work and life in London. I cannot wait to get started! What is your favourite thing about living in Devon? Living in Devon provides a great balance between the city and the countryside. Exeter is a cultured and lively city, with something for everyone, whilst having Dartmoor on your doorstep is almost unrivalled for hiking, climbing and wild camping. It is fantastic to be somewhere where you can round-off your day’s work with a drink on Exeter Quay or surfing at the North Devon beaches. It is a haven for the lover of the great outdoors!

What can you remember about your assessment day?

It was intense, but enjoyable! We were involved in various individual and group tasks which allowed us to demonstrate professional and interpersonal skills, whilst gaining an insight into the work we could undertake as Trainees at Michelmores. It was a challenging day, so I highly recommend preparation (and a good night’s sleep the day before) but I loved every minute. What interaction have you had with the Firm since being offered a training contract? After being offered a training contract, Michelmores paired me up with a ‘buddy’ – a current Trainee at the Firm who has been on-hand to answer my many questions about what to expect from my traineeship, as well as offer guidance during my final years of study. I’ve also been

BEN BUTTERWORTH Future Trainee

30 | MICHELMORES

Why did you choose Michelmores? When I started my search for a training contract I had three keys priorities. Firstly, I wanted to work for a firm in the South West but still have similar opportunities to Trainees in a London firm. Next, I wanted to work for a firm which was ambitious – and finally, one that was friendly and approachable. I attended the vacation scheme in Exeter and found Michelmores ticked all of the boxes! Where have you spent each of your four seats? My first seat was in the Tax, Trusts & Succession team, followed by a second seat in the Planning team. My third seat was in the Contentious Probate team, where I have recently qualified, and I spent my final seat in the Commercial Disputes & Regulatory team. What has been the best part of your training so far? The best part of my training so far has been the opportunity to regularly commute up to London and spend time in- house with one of our charity clients, providing support to their legacy income team. This has given me the opportunity to build a real relationship with the client, with a hands-on

learning experience at the same time. It also confirmed that it was an area of law I want to pursue further.

Tell me about something you have become involved in whilst at Michelmores that you wouldn’t have expected Apart from organising the first year Trainee Christmas Bazaar, I was surprised by the ongoing opportunities to work across teams, and so being involved in different parts of the Firm. For example, I was asked in my first seat (Tax, Trusts & Succession) to assist the Corporate team on a corporate deal in London. This gave me an opportunity to have a snapshot experience of the Corporate team without actually doing a seat there! I am also a member of the Firm’s charity of the year committee.

What was the last picture you took on your phone? My dog, Hugo! He is a well-known face amongst the Trainees.
