Normand Riopel will challenge Paul- Émile Duval for the mayor’s seat in the Champlain Township municipal election this fall. After 27 years in municipal politics, Riopel decided it is time for him to move to the head seat at the council table. Riopel began his political career in 1991 on Longueuil Township council, then as one of the two Ward 3 councillors on Champlain Township council after the 1998 amalgamation. “It (mayor) is not a fun job,” Riopel said during an April 23 interview. “But it’s fun to serve your community, and I like local politics.” He observed that his experience with municipal business began when he started working, first part-time and later full-time, with the roadworks departments for both townships. “I got to know the ins and outs of the township,” Riopel said, with a smile. Campaign issues Infrastructure is one of the top priorities for Riopel. Development of an asset management plan is a close second. “The base of our municipality is our infrastructure,” he stated. “You must

maintain it, do repairs, and keep up with work that needs to be done.” Riopel noted that financing all of the infrastructure maintenance and improvements needed for the township is a challenge. But, “with a vision and long-term planning, it is possible.” Other priority issues Riopel listed include attractingmore investment to themunicipality, maintaining existing recreation services and making use of local beaches, arts and culture facilities, and other resources to help support local tourism. He also indicated support for a future community centre project in L’Orignal. Riopel also noted the current controversy over a proposal for a cement plant project near L’Orignal. During all past council discussions on the issue, he has abstained from voting and comment. He explained in his press brief that the fact that he owns land close to the proposed plant site creates a potential conflict of interest situation.
