6:38; Psalm 40:6-8; Hebrews 10:5- 10). The atoning sacrifice of Christ for us had its original source in the will of God the Father, His loving will towards us. (John 3:16; Rom. 5:8). TUESDAY, September 30. Philippians 2 :9 . We have just béen told how Jesus humbled Himself from “being in the form of God” and being “on an equal ity with God” to the death of the cross. Now we are told that as the out come to this humiliation of Himself (this is the force of the “wherefore” with which the verse begins) God “highly exalted Him” : Him Who humbled Himself to the lowest place, “emptied Himself,” God exalted to the highest place. That is the law of the kingdom of God (Luke 18:14; 14:11). Him Who made Himself servant of all, God made “Lord of all” (cf. Matt. 20: 26, 27) (as to the exaltation of Jesus, see also John 17:4; Acts 2:23, 24, 32, 33, 36; 3:13; 5:30, 31; Éph. 1:20-22; 1 Pet. 3:22). Humiliation of self is the path to exaltation by God; exaltation of self is the path to’ humiliation by God. God gave unto Jesus “the name which is above every name.” This does not mean that the name ‘Jesus” is in itself above every other name; but being the name of this One Who has so deeply humiliated Himself, and God having therefore exalted this One above all others, the name “Jesus” thus becomes above every other name. Just as the name “Washington” in American history is not in itself any higher than other names, but being the s name of that person whom the American peo ple has exalted to the first place in its affections, that name thus became above every other American name. But, furthermore, the name of “Jesus” was originally given by God Himself to Jesus (Matt. 1:21), and the name is itself significant of that humiliation of Himself to die by reason of which God exalted Him to the highest place. Nev ertheless, it is in the consequent exaltation of Jesus by the Father that the name of Jesus comes to be above every name (cf. Eph. 1:20, 21).

HEART OF A JEW What Christian people need to rea lize, I believe, more than anything else is the fact that the heart of a Jew is not different from that of a Gentile; it is capable of being touched with the love of Christ. His sad history has taught the Jew to distinguish and dif ferentiate between the true and the apparent regard of the world toward him. Just as it is not those, who say unto Him “Lord, Lord,” who have been promised an entrance into the Kingdom, so it is not all those who say they love the Jew who leave any impression or have any effect on his opinion or con ception of the character of Christ or of Christians. Where there is a genuine love and regard manifested toward him, for Christ’s sake he will, and does, recognize it.—Henry Hellyer. CHANGE OF RESIDENCE Dr. T. de Witt Talmage never erased a name from his Church Roll when a member died, for he claimed that it was just a change of residence; and should he turn a man out of his Church for going to Heaven? He hoped to call his Church Roll on the streets of glory, and he wanted every member to respond. As a result, out of about three thousand members, when the great Church building was burned, they did not find on the Church Roll five hundred members who were here; the rest had changed their residence. Though it was a bad application of it he had a Scriptural vision. The Church of Jesus Christ is made up of all His spiritual members, and He is the Head of the whole body.
