writing is reverent and sincere. He might be shocked to find that any one thinks he is compromising with the theory of evolution, but those who have observed with regret what has happened to the American Scien tific Affiliation cannot help but be less than enthusiastic about this volume. A valuable feature of the book is the author’s explanations of the meanings of words in the original Hebrew. 160 plus ix pages; cloth; Fleming H. Revel Company, Westwood, N.J. $4.00. Reviewed by Bolton David- heiser. This new volume, which promises to be a valuable text for Christian workers, covers the most common types of problems. Practical illustra tions are given with basic approaches in helping both adults as well as children and young people who are emotionally distraught. A compre hensive g lo s sa r y of psychological terms is included. Many Christian workers today realize the tremendous personal and material needs which people are experiencing. Most pas tors have a natural hesitancy to send an individual to a psychologist or psychiatrist who may not know the Lord. Many practical suggestions are given on nearly every conceivable problem with which one might be confronted, with a spiritual challenge always paramount. — 278 pages; cloth; Zondervan Pub. This volume completes the New Testament of a six-volume set being produced in the evangelical Wesleyan tradition by a team of scholars from nine denominations. They are in the main evangelical, although this is a somewhat relative term these days. Authors writing in this volume are from Taylor University, Marion Col lege, Eastern Nazarene College, and one from a Friends’ pastorate in Newberg, Oregon. Introductions and outlines accompany the commentary sections. Rather good outlines reflect in some cases homiletical insight. He makes a good deal out of alleged differences between prophecy and apocalytic teaching and on this basis follows the lead of others who say that the thou sand years in chapter 20 is symbolic. He, and they, forget that numbers in prophetic patterns are valid and never change in the pattern of proph ecy from the initial revelation, through the interpretation, predic tion, and fulfillment, and this is true in the apocalyptic work of Daniel. The set itself will have some significance in revealing a pretty well-defined school of interpretation.—523 pages; cloth; William B. Eerdmans Publish ing Co., Grand Rapids; $8.95. Creation Revealed by Frederick Arthur Filby The author accepts a very ancient age for the earth and the long peri ods of geological time employed by the paleontologists. In the spectrum of beliefs that have developed about creation and evolution, he takes a position which is only a shade, if at all, to the right of Ramm’s progres sive creationism. The latter is the position taken by a large number of the members of the American Scien tific Affiliation, and it is deplored by this reviewer. Unlike Ramm and a number of the members of the A.S.A., Dr. Filby does not belittle the Fundamentalists. His manner of
