T he doctor thinks my trouble is tension. I f only I could learn to trust God as I should!” So wrote a missionary friend o f ours recently. “ A fellow who was in school with us had to give up his pas torate b e c a u s e o f a nervous breakdown. Where are all those verses about ‘perfect p e a c e ’ ?” This query was in a letter from a young woman whose husband has just begun his own ministry as a pastor. An older pastor o f our ac quaintance recently suffered a mental breakdown. Members o f his church were requested not to send cards or communicate with him in any way. “ Anxiety. Tension. Pressure.” These are common words today. Volumes have been written on the subject o f dealing with our problems in this area o f life. Doc tors blame nervous tension fo r the majority o f the ills that send patients crowding i n t o their waiting rooms. Mental hospitals are filled to capacity. Should not Christian b e lie v e r s , however, abide in a state o f peace and tran quillity that t r a n s c e n d s th is? Why is it that even apparently dedicated Christian leaders seem to be breaking under the stresses o f every-day life ? Have these in dividuals and others like them failed God and themselves, and literally doubted their way into physical, emotional, and spiritual bankruptcy? Contemporary opinion on the subject o f nervous stress seems to express the notion that anxiety and tension are exclusive prod ucts o f the twentieth century, along with space capsules, tele vision and Penicillin. W e seem to suppose that in the “ good old days” Grandma churned her but
ter, washed her clothes on a wash board, trimmed the wicks on her kerosene lamps and enjoyed per fect peace at all times. Modem ways o f doing things have pre sumably turned us into a genera tion o f neurotics, A look into the pages o f Scrip ture reveals that at least as long ago as the time o f our Lord ’s earthly ministry there were indi viduals who suffered from nerv ous tension. When He was a din ner guest in the home o f Mary, Martha and L a z a r u s , Christ found Martha burdened with a load o f anxiety. “ Martha, Mar tha,” Jesus said to her, “ Thou art careful (anxious) and troubled a b o u t m a n y t h i n g s ” (Luke 1 0 :4 1 ). Today we would say that Martha had a lot on her m ind; that she was “ under pressure.” Paul referred to “ that which cometh upon me daily, the care o f all the churches” and he said that he was “ pressed out o f measure, above strength,” (2 Cor. 1 :8 ). He described his difficulties in Macedonia: “ Troubled on every side; w i t h o u t were fightings, within were fears” (2 Cor. 7 :5 ). Apparently, something not too different f r o m what we call “ pressure” and “ tension” also plagued Paul, the mighty apostle. Today, many born-again be lievers find themselves troubled and anxious. Some o f them feel a sense o f guilt over the very fact that they are troubled and anx ious. To the original load o f pres sure and tension is added a load o f self-condemnation. A fte r all, have we not been taught that “ it is a sin to w orry” ? W e know that we should “ just trust the Lord.” The Bible bids us “Weep with th em th a t w e e p ,” (R om a n s 1 2 :1 5 ). Some o f us say, “ Shame on anyone fo r weeping! A Chris-
