I n D eu te ro n om y 2 2 :8, we read these w o r d s : “ When t h o u buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement o f thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, i f any man fall from thence.” This verse refers to the type o f architecture that was used not only in Old Testament times, but also in the days o f our Lord. Many homes o f this kind can still be seen in various parts o f the Eastern world. The flat roofs o f the houses a f­ forded a splendid place fo r fam i­ lies to gather. Here children were taught to weave, to memorize portions o f the Old Testament, or to hear from their mothers’ lips stories o f the Old Testament heroes. Lest anyone coming to the new house should go too near the edge o f the roo f and thus fall into the street or court below, God gave this law setting forth the neces­ sity o f building a balustrade or railing about the roo f to prevent an accident which might result in death, and the blame fall upon the owner o f the new house. So many are b u i l d i n g new houses today and establishing new homes, but what about the “ battlements” ? They should be not merely a railing o r balustrade that would prevent a fall and physical injury, but the “ battle­ ments” that prevent a fall into sin and thus cause spiritual in­ jury.
