Les élèves des écoles Paul VI, de l’École secondaire catholique régio- nale de Hawkesbury (l’ESCRH) et du Sommet se sont rassemblés au Complexe Sportif Robert-Hartley le jeudi 25 septembre dernier pour célébrer le 50ième anniversaire du drapeau Franco-Ontarien. La cérémonie, qui devait avoir lieu au monument de la francophonie sur l’île du Chenail, fut déménagée à la salle multidis- ciplinaire à cause de la météo défavorable. Le tout a débuté avec un tintamarre par les élèves présents, une pratique qui est sym- bolique du besoin d’exprimer l’importance et la fierté des communautés francophones en Ontario. Ce fut suivit d’un tour de piste d’un gigantesque drapeau franco-ontarien et de discours de dignitaires de la scène municipale, scolaire et religieuse. « Le gouvernement ontarien recon- naît que la francophonie est un atout à l’économie de notre province. Je pense que l’on n’a jamais vu autant de députés francophiles. On sait que les francophones sont ici pour rester et on veut les appuyer » mentionne Stéphane Sarrazin, député de Glengarry-Prescott et Russell et adjoint de la ministre des affaires francophones. Qu’est-ce qu’une plante hybride?
Un melon d’eau sans pépins, une pomme qui goûte la poire ou une tulipe noire : ces fruits et fleurs ont tous été créés grâce à l’hybridation. Cette technique consiste à croiser deux plantes d’espèces ou de variétés différentes pour en obtenir une troisième. Par exemple, nous pourrions décider de croiser un concombre (espèce) libanais (variété) avec un concombre des champs pour obtenir un gros concombre à la peau lisse et délicate. COMMENT ÇA FONCTIONNE? L’hybridation des plantes est un phénomène naturel. Il arrive que le pollen d’une variété de fleurs rencontre le pistil d’une autre variété et que celle-ci donne naissance à une troisième variété par pur accident. Il est également possible de jouer à mère Nature et de croiser manuellement certaines plantes artificiellement. Plusieurs variétés de roses ont été créées de la
main de l’homme. Pour ce faire, l’horticulteur prélève le pollen d’un rosier et le dépose sur le pistil d’une fleur d’une autre variété de rosier afin de donner naissance à un nouveau type de plant. POURQUOI CRÉE-T-ON DES HYBRIDES? Plusieurs raisons justifient le recours à l’hybridation. Il y a d’abord le souci de produire des plantes plus résistantes aux maladies et aux envahisseurs. Ensuite vient le désir de créer des plants plus productifs qui donneront des fruits plus savoureux. En ce qui concerne les fleurs ornementales, l’hybridation permet d’obtenir des variétés plus odorantes, plus colorées, avec des formes uniques de pétales.

Le porte-parole de Postes Canada, Jon Hamilton, a déclaré la semaine dernière qu’il existait encore un «écart important» entre Postes Canada et le syndicat. Il a ajouté que les nouvelles offres refléteront les changements apportés par le gouver- nement fédéral et une directive générale visant à consolider le service postal et à alléger le fardeau des contribuables. La situation financière de Postes Canada est désastreuse et l’entreprise affirme avoir perdu plus de 10 millions $ par jour au cours de l’été, l’incertitude liée à la main-d’œuvre persistant. Le service postal a compté sur le soutien fédéral pour main- tenir ses activités ces dernières années. Le négociateur du STTP, Jim Gallant, a souligné la semaine dernière que le syn- dicat comprenait les difficultés financières de Postes Canada, mais que les solutions proposées par le gouvernement fédéral étaient «extrêmes». Il a ajouté que le syndicat souhaite que la grève nationale pousse le gouvernement fédéral à revenir sur sa réforme de Postes Canada et à procéder à un examen du mandat public. La Fédération canadienne de l’entre- prise indépendante a averti que la grève aurait des «répercussions significatives» sur les petites entreprises qui dépendent de Postes Canada, mais l’organisation a encouragé Ottawa à aller de l’avant avec les réformes prévues.
