A True Family Practice
Paying Tribute to the Moms and Dads of Gardens Dental Care
Luckily, many of our team members have plenty of experience treating people like family because they are loving parents themselves. I consider my role as a father to Davis and Dawson my greatest accomplishment in life. I lost my dad at a young age, so I never really had a chance to develop that father-son bond. It’s extremely important to me to provide that bond with my sons. But I’m far from the only doting parent at Gardens Dental Care. In honor of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, we want to share some photos of our staff and their family members. When we say we treat patients as family, we mean we want to make you smile the way these kids and parents do in the photos included with this newsletter. Thank you to all of our working parents. We know the sacrifice you make to come to work, and we are beyond grateful for it. –Dr. David Yates
It’s a bit of a cliché to say your practice treats patients like family, but we strive for it nevertheless. I truly believe the way you interact with patients is just as important as the level of care you provide. You could be the greatest dentist in the world, but nobody will care if you are hostile to the people you serve.

CELEBRATE NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY Tips for Capturing the Best Outdoor Photo!
trying to capture. It’s generally accepted that side-lighting, where the sun is coming from either side of the camera, is the most desirable for landscapes because the contrasts between light and shadow can add depth to your photos. However, front- and back-lighting —where you shoot away from or into the sun — can also produce nice photos. Similar to angles, try experimenting until you find something that looks good to you. CROP FOR TEXTURE Sometimes the difference between an amazing shot and a mediocre one is distance. When photographing nature, try zooming in or moving geographically closer and cropping close on your subject. This could be tree bark, a leaf, the forest floor, or a lizard’s skin. The fine details of your subject can often create stunning images. In your quest to snap the most Instagram-worthy shots, the most important thing to remember is to respect the animals and the environment. Be sure to bring bags with you to take any garbage or other waste with you, and stay on designated trails while exploring. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be taking incredible nature photos in no time.
Nature Photography Day is June 15, and it continues to garner enthusiasmwith each passing year. It’s
been designated by the North America Nature Photography Association as a day to promote the enjoyment of outdoor photography and to explain how nature photography can advance conservation efforts locally and worldwide. Almost everyone has access to a sufficient camera with smartphones, but not everyone knows how to best capture a beautiful nature scene. Here are some tips to help! FIND THE ANGLES Landscape photography isn’t about appealing to someone else’s sense of style; it’s about shooting what makes you happy. Take some time to study the work of other nature photographers you enjoy. What angles do they use? What colors do they coordinate within the frame? How close do they get to their subject? Try something different. Go against the grain, use a different angle, shoot a close-up where others would shoot wide angle. Find a good starting place and experiment a little. HARNESS THE LIGHT Nature photos often look great in the morning or evening light, but the type of lighting you use is often dictated by the scene you are

Brushing Up on Dental Care Tips for Better Oral Hygiene A study conducted by the University of Adelaide recently found that orthodontic care has no direct impact on a person’s long- term dental health. In other words, just because you had braces or some other form of orthodontic treatment does not mean you can be lax about dental hygiene or regular checkups and still avoid tooth decay. Braces may leave your smile looking picturesque, but the fight for healthy teeth is fought daily. Here are a few tips for practicing proper oral hygiene.
Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Aim the brush at an angle to reach the area where the teeth and gums connect. Brush with short, back-and-forth strokes across the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth. Brushes with soft bristles that can get between your molars are ideal. You should try to replace your toothbrush every 3–4 months or whenever the bristles start to fray. Store your toothbrush in a dry place where it can remain upright until your next use. When you floss, use about 18 inches of dental floss and wrap the ends around each of your middle fingers. Pinch the remaining string between your pointer fingers and thumbs. Run the floss back and forth and up and down between two teeth at a time and be gentle around your gums. Use a different part of the floss every couple of teeth to avoid spreading bacteria.
In addition to proper brushing and flossing techniques, there are other ways you can protect your teeth. Adding mouthwash to your plaque-fighting arsenal can remove more hard-to-reach bacteria. You should also try to avoid snacking (without brushing after) before going to bed since this will give bacteria time to feed and multiply overnight. Avoid all tobacco products and, of course, remember to schedule a dental cleaning and exam at least twice a year.
A lot of this might seem like common sense, but not everyone knows best practices when it comes to keeping your teeth healthy.
