Kilworth Youth Rise Above the Net “You never get anywhere without a team around you, on the court and off” is a quote from Mason Lange, who is making waves in the volleyball world. Appreciating his success comes with a tremendous amount of support from both family and community, the 17-year- old Kilworth teen is making history for Canadian volleyball.

Among his many other accolades, Mason was selected to join U19 Team Canada at the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Pan Am Cup this past July. Mason led his team in points scored, kills, and receives to help win Canada’s first-ever bronze medal. Mason was also selected to represent Ontario at the Canada Summer Games, where Team Ontario won a bronze medal. Mason is attending the National Excellence Program (NEP) this fall, where he will train with the National team coaching staff, along with 15 other athletes. He will compete for Leaside Volleyball Club in the coming season.

he could pursue volleyball at the highest level of competition. “It’s in my blood,” adds Mason. “I don’t just do drills, I ask questions, watch videos, and learn from coaches and teammates.” Kenzie began her volleyball journey at age 10 and was hooked immediately. Her key to success is setting goals and reminding herself why she plays the game. “There were definitely hard times—long practices, tough losses, or days when I didn’t feel I was improving,” she explains. “But I learned to stay focused on the bigger picture. I knew to succeed, I’d have to put in the work consistently.” The commitment both Mason and Kenzie demonstrate is mirrored in their parents’ dedication to being there when their kids need them. Mason and Kenzie also recognize the significant contributions the Kilworth community has made to their success. In the 2024-25 season, Mason won MVP for the 17U Forest City Volleyball Team and MVP for the Medway High School Volleyball team. “The support from this community has been huge for us— whether it’s teachers, coaches, friends, or neighbours cheering us on, their encouragement makes a real difference. We’re proud to represent Komoka-Kilworth and hope to make everyone proud as we move forward in our volleyball journeys.” Photos courtesy of the Lange family

The volleyball gene runs deep in the Lange family, as Kenzie Lange, Mason’s younger sister, charts her own path to stardom. At 14, Kenzie plays left side for the Forest City Volleyball Team (16U) and Team Ontario. Representing the Forest City Volleyball Club, Kenzie’s team won the Provincial Championship this season, a first for the club since 2013. She and her beach volleyball partner, Darci Wilson, also won gold in the Beach Volleyball National Championships this past August, making them the top team in Canada. Mason and Kenzie’s mom, Michelle, is a volleyball coach at South Collegiate Institute and Forest City Volleyball Club. Watching her work at practices and games as youngsters set the stage for both kids to pick up the ball when they were ready. Mason began playing when he was 11 and fell in love with the sport.
