Time to accessorize your truck? “I am mesmerized by eyes,” Nicky highlights about her influence. “I always say that I can be inspired by anything, as long as it has a pulse! I tend to paint whatever touches my heart.” Nicky prefers to photograph the subject herself for commission work, welcoming opportunity for her to connect with and, as she mentions, “get a sense of what they are like ‘in real life’.” Otherwise, Nicky works with a range of photographs. This self-taught artist declares, “I don’t want to be in a box. Artistically, I feel I am still growing. Every time I reach a milestone, I am most proud of the latest piece. In particular, there is one small panel I created of my elderly mom who is suffering from dementia.” LOCAL ARTIST PROFILE Nicky AC Decorte-Markerink by Peri Hayes Nicky AC Decorte-Markerink has explored the creative arts in various ways throughout her life, with her previous career being a photo journalist: “I have been an artist from the moment I could hold a crayon, and that is in large part to my mother. I had my first exhibition in my teenage years, and being creative is an integral part of who I am.” Growing up in the Netherlands and having experienced much of the world, Nicky presently resides in St. Thomas. As she describes, “It was in Canada that I discovered the joy of working with acrylic paint. My husband and I travelled the world before we landed here in 2014.” Nicky generally paints in the order of sketching and painting in grayscale before incorporating colour: “I love that these paints are water-based; you can clean your materials quite easily and not put toxins into the environment.”
Moreover, Nicky details a current project: “I started to work on a series about what we see in the local streets: faces ravaged by addiction, displaced people without homes -- the despair. I feel that too often we turn our heads, because it is so confronting and uncomfortable. Making them ‘unseen’ does not help with the issue. I know for a fact that there are quite
